Minnesotans In Winter

We aren't afraid of a little snow. At least not afraid enough. This weekend we got 8" of snow. There were 700 State Patrol calls for accidents and 300 for spin outs. And yes, snow is slippery and not at all like sandpaper. Minnesotans don't use their heads any better than anyone else I guess.

Iowegians aren't any different. I had to make a road trip for my daughter Sat morning. It was snowing......I can't believe the number of cars in the ditch, and doing loop da loops going down the road. It is scary to get out on the road with some of these people.

Must be a bunch of Georgia folks on the highways up there. We're always told we don't know how to drive in the snow. Just send them back south.

Yes, winter driving skills are quickly forgotten in April and May. It takes a couple of snows for people to remember. Some never do learn or remember. Saturday in Iowa could have been worse, there were only 4 people killed. The worst accident coming as a result of a "PRO" driver driving a semi that crossed the median on I-80. Always amazed at the number of semi's that think that that 80,000lb load is going to keep them on the slick and icy roads. Of course til that trailer decides to try and pass the tractor. Be safe everyone and be ever watchful of the median crossers also. gobble

No different here in NH. Like someone else said some folks just forget and have to be reminded.

Yes, MN can be scary. I had to use a four-lane highway to get my grandson to and from work during the weekend storm, and I swear that some of those drivers on the four-lane follow the motto, "Thespeedlimitsignsays65andI'llbedamnedifI'llgoanyslower."

Probably plenty of driving-fools in every state.

Seems that a lot of people just won't lower their speed to match road conditions. Dad always said, "Slow and steady wins the race in winter driving."

Cannot even count how many people I've seen lose control nor vehicles I've seen sitting in the ditch (even ones with 4 wheel drive)... while I kept it slow and made it to my destination.

Did you ever notice that the majority of the ones in the ditch are driving 4X4s?? 4-wheel drive makes it too easy to go faster than you should. Even though they go better, they do NOT steer or stop any better on slippery roads.

Onefarmer nailed it. Seems as if even the locals forget how to drive during the first significant snowfall. I have the great pleasure of teaching my daughter how to drive in winter weather with emphasis on smooth, calm, relaxed driving. Sure enough, she put it sideways with all wheel drive. She's learning, and by spring she'll be much better.

Love that one. (Cars won't start) I always say there are people laying on beaches all over the world, why do we live here? I have been out side all day fighting with diesels and moving snow.

A true story. Several years ago we had a BAD ice storm. I worked at Kmart and all the city folk that lived less than a mile form the store. I who lives 10 miles from the store gets called to come in. I said sure I'll be there right after I drop some cows of at the stockyard, which is 44 miles away. I as there by 1pm.

As a life long Minnesotan I am amazed at the tires that come on most of the new vehicles these days, given that there could be snow on the roads here for nearly 6 months. Not to make excuses for crappy drivers, but modern, smooth riding tires that the masses have on their cars these days just don't cut it once the snow falls. How long has it been since you have heard someone say " I've got to get my snow tires on pretty soon". Used to be commonplace here years ago.

The "All Season Radial" was another scam foisted on the public. Didn't take snow country drivers long to figure that one out, though. Most people around here switch to true snow tires in the winter. (those that can afford it, anyway) It's not all bad driving either. Todays short wheelbase, front wheel drives are absolutely treacherous on slush or ice. Those old Olds, Caddy's, Buick's, Monaco's and such with the 135 inch + wheelbases and ten inches of clearance underneath went through far more snow than toady's cars. The long wheelbases made them much more controllable on slippery roads. We hardly ever see 4 WD's in the ditch here. It's usually the short, small, front wheel drive stuff. We have a Chevy Aveo. It does not have snow tires. When the roads get dicey, that sucker stays in the yard and we drive the truck.

I think the thing that dooms 4wd drivers is that on a road vehicle the front and rear wheels have to be going the same speed, instead of like tractors that have the front wheels a couple of percent faster. The instant you try to turn on slick roads, you have an immediate understeer condition and nothing gets you in trouble on slush or ice quicker than a front end that skates. As much as we like to snicker about today's winter drivers, the type of vehicles we drive these days is a lot of it.

In Ontario, our insurance company offers a 5 to 10 percent discount if you have 4
snows on your car. In Quebec, snow tires are mandatory. Ben

Ever notice that most front wheel drive cars go into the snow bank rear end first? One of the causes is that the rear of the vehicle has less co-efficient of friction than the front, due to its light weight. The front end being heavier, maintains traction just a bit longer. Kind of like roller skating on just the front wheels.

(quoted from post at 08:43:32 12/12/16) It's not the real Minnesotans that have a problem with the snow, it's the outsiders that have come to share the prosperity of MN!

Not really! At least on this side of the state! It's the home grown locals!
