1999 Ford f450

What can you guys tell me about these trucks? V10 gasser, 16ft flat
bed, 2wd, 5 speed, 103k miles, asking $6500. Clutch is suppose to
be good, tires are suppose to be good, nothing wrong other than he
said 3rd gear synchronizer must be wore, said if you shift fast it
takes, shift slow it shifts fine. Anything to look for on it? How were
those v10's on power and mpg's? As always thanks...

They seem reliable and mileage is better than one would imagine. I would not doubt the mileage in the add. With low mileage (remember when that number was a worn out piece of garbage ready for a rebuild!) The unit looks great. Jim

I have a '00 V10 F350, 12'deck, automatic 2wd. It's actually pretty good...don't know about 14 mpg but 12, maybe get 14 with the 5 spd and its all about how you drive. If you stomp on it you will pass everything except a gas station. If you keep the rpms constant and don't accelerate like your on the drag strip you will do ok.
Other than that they are strong and pull well. Also I believe that engine is one of the early ones with a 2 valve engine, the plugs are not too hard to change compared to the three valve engine which had the spark plugs pop...I could be wrong on this but that is what mine has.

OK price if the deck is good and the tires and brakes are also good.

I wish I had 4WD but surprisingly the truck handles well in the snow and driving in the soft fields all fall I only had to be pushed out once...4WD probably wouldn't have helped me there.

Good Luck, Grant

I've got a 99 F250 4x4 V10 automatic that will get 12 mpg at best. Only has 84,000 on it with no issues. Pulls 33' gooseneck horse trailer and 25' gooseneck flatbed like a champ with both loaded max. Pulling, it will get about 7 - 8 mpg. Had it about 15 years.

V10 is a good engine. I call BS on the 14mpg. Maybe if you shut it off and coast down hills. If that thing gets more than 10 mpg, I'll buy lunch.

They are pretty good ole trucks. The early modular engines had issues spitting out spark plugs but most have been fixed by now. There was also issues with exhaust manifold studs breaking which is a labortion extensive repair. LI stem for exhaust leaks and look for holes where there should be studs n nuts. 14 mpg?? Not in my experiance. 11-12 empty and light foot. 9-10 loaded and down from.there with heavy right foot.

What he said I have a E350 V10 coming today to replace the broken studs in the left head  About all with that mileage will need ball joints I checked one last week a 2011 with a 6.2 gas the left lower ball joint was worn out. It was the first 6.2 I have driven let me tell you it will get'er done :D

Transmission google it a fix will not be cheap either.

I have a 99 F550 I bought new with the 7.3 diesel and the 6 speed and it'll get 14 MPG on an Interstate running about 65 MPH other wise its around 12 MPG,I can't see the V-10 doing better. It has about 165,000 on it with very few mechanical problems really like the way it rides and drives.

The V10 will go down in history as one of the "classics". As others have mentioned, spark plugs popping out, later ones not being able to get the plugs out, and manifold studs are the major weaknesses. I have never had the luck of getting a manual, so no experience there. 14 MPG is possible with the 5 spd and 2wd. I can get 13.5 hwy with mine. Expect 10 mpg around town. I had to do manifold studs on mine last year, tedious, but not the worst repair I have ever had to do. Visit the forums at Ford Truck Enthusiasts, and start reading...

If the seller is stretching the truth a little on the mileage he is probably stretching the truth about the transmission too. I would plan to repair or replace the transmission in the near future and factor that into the price.

Got the van with the V10 done it was quite a job... Came in with one broke and ended up with 4 more broke on the left bank, to get the manifold off. I was able to salvage the rest with patience. These studs are about as hard as I have came across one was broke long so was able to weld a nut to it and work it out the other 4 were broke recessed about 3/16". My question were your's broke recessed and did the washer nut trick work well. I was tempted to try it the problem was the two fronts were broke its a van with a damm oil cooler in the way I had to do all of them from the bottom I don't think I could have got a good shot at those two with a welder. The good, the engine mount to frame bracket bolts on if it did not it would have been mission impossible.

There are easier ways in life to make money I did not have to price this one. I am sure if I am corned I will price myself out of the next one Wink
