Hi, New here. I have a stock 1939 D2 IHC pickup. I am now looking for a period Farmall A to go with my truck. I am in need of buying advice. from what I can tell the 1939 is only manual start unless bell housing was changed? Should I seek out electric start for ease? What else should I know for the search?

I am 63 and have a 41 hand start A. Some times it starts on the first pull, some times on the 31st pull. I sure do wish it was
electric.

A Farmall A is not a hard tractor to crank. AS a kid we had a 39 A and more recently about 10 years ago I had a 41 without electric start. I now have a 43 A that we hand start occasionally because the battery is dead. Non are any trouble. I am 85 and have had shoulder replacement and still do it. Eliminates the need to have other problems caused by the battery and starter. Keep it original, means more to those who are interested in it.

I put the torque tube, fly wheel, and starter off a junk C on my A. It wasn't expensive and was easy enough that I did it with the A loaded on one of my flatbeds. gm

Well you can buy one that is hand start and then 20 years from now you will wish if had a starter on it or that you would never get old. If I where you I'd get one that has it own starter and then if you do not want to start it that way you can use the hand crank but I know for sure if you keep it very long you will soon find you wished it had a starter on it

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Up until this year it was away from the house and it cut grass weekly. I enjoyed using it, just cringed at thought of a hard start day. Now that it is back home it is basically a trailer queen. When I want to drive it, I just have someone drag me a few feet and it starts as soon as you pop the clutch.

works both ways. you'll probably hate the crank at times, but on the other hand, sounds like you are wanting to stay true to the original. If I was going to go to that much trouble to match up with a stock d2 truck, I would keep it a stock tractor.

One in good mechanical cond and tuned up right will start on first crank once you learn the choke setting for your temp. Warm weather you just crank with 1/4 throttle. You are free to do what ya want but if matching your truck is the intention then don't let hand crank only steer you otherwise.

Great looking pickup! If you were to take your pickup and a tractor to a show, I suspect that most people will spend 90 plus percent of their time looking at the pickup.

A Farmall A is a handy little mower/yard tractor that should hold its resale value. With hand start, not so much. Your call.

Probably only a few of the "correct police" would care or comment on it if it had a starter that
was not stock. Others would not know or care, just enjoying the restored tractor. If you want to
routinely start it by crank you might to have a magneto, I think they retard the ignition more for
starting than a distributor for less chance of kickback. Someone please correct me if I am wrong
about this.

That is excactly what happens to a lot of A's. Pulling from the front can easily break the "ears" off the motor block that hold the front end on. Always pull a Farmall A backwards

I have 5 tractors and one is a crank start, the WC Allis.
Cool but can have an attitude and then I wish it was electric start.
An A would be easier cranking than the WC so as long as it starts easy you're probalby OK.

My A has elec start but most of the time the battery is dead so I hand crank it. Starts on the second pull most of the time, easy to pull even for
an old geezer.
