IH 584 PTO Noise

Hello. I have a IH 584 and when the PTO is running there is an intermittent banging noise coming from some where. It only occurs when I have something attached, like a snow blower. It will do it even if the blower is empty, but it will not do it if there is nothing attached. I have checked for interference thinking that spinning PTO shaft is contacting something but I can not see where that is happening. If any one has any idea as to problem it would sure help me. I may need to use it a lot this winter since it looks like it will be a bad one for snow.
Thanks in advance to all who respond, and Merry Christmas to all.

Hi Calgary, my guess is that it is the teeth on the pressure plate that drive the PTO shaft.
Here is a test, with your snow blower attached and PTO engage rev engine to about 1800 RPM with foot throttle and then quickly release the foot throttle and listen for a rattling noise by clutch housing.

See link to photo of 584 like pressure plate, the PTO shaft goes into the drive teeth in the center of the pressure plate and the teeth are a softer material than the PTO shaft and the teeth wear and cause a rattling noise when PTO is running an implement.

Have you run something besides a blower? They are notorious for failed gearboxes and bearings and chains slapping and banging.

Thanks Jim, do you think I could run it through the winter with out doing major (expensive)damage to other components?

Do you know if I can do this repair with splitting tractor? I have a service manual but it is packed away, we are building a house and its in a storage container along with most of our stuff so I can not get to it right away.

Hi, if it is the teeth on the pressure plate it will just get noisier as they wear and eventually they will strip and PTO and all hydraulics will stop including the power steering..
To repair requires splitting tractor at clutch housing, not a big job with the proper tools and there is no front end loader on the tractor.
When you do the repair it will be new clutch, pressure plate, pilot and release bearings. Also you will have to inspect the splines on the PTO drive shaft.
