"Niitakayama nobore 1208"
Translated this means:
Climb Mt. Niitaka 12/08
This was the coded signal sent to the Japanese fleet which was already on it's way east to attack Pearl Harbor.
Mount Niitaka (in what is now Taiwan) was the highest point in the Japanese empire.
Prior to this signal the Japanese high command had not committed itself 100% to starting the war.
This signal set in motion the chain of events from which there was no going back.
I have always thought the meaning of this signal to be rather fitting.
To climb this 13,000' peak would be a long, arduous adventure. One fraught with chance and peril.
