Hey guys I'm bringing the subject up again! I'm turbocharging my 1965 4020 Deisel. I'm wondering what turbo anyone else has used and which ones sound pretty nice. Don't neccasarily have to have good sound but kinda fun to hear that whistle!

They all make noise. What you hear when young is not what you hear when you have heard a medium tractor with not much muffler and a turbo for 25000 hours. Just choose reliability and let the sound be very quiet. It is not a device to use as a audio advertisement. Jim

I have one with a M&W kit on it and another that was originally gas and it has a complete 4430 engine in it. It would be easier to install the M&W kit, I think. You could find an engine from a John Deere turbo charged tractor that is junk, You could use the turbo parts. They are harder to squeeze under the hood. I had several people tell me I was making a mistake with both using turbo charged engines, but I wouldn't change them back. I still use them for the same purposes, they just do it easier. I also have a 4430 with a 4440 engine in it and a IH 766 with a 1066 engine in it. I like to play and I am 65 years old.

Any straight piped turbo will sound good. However, you will want to wear ear protection. After afew years or few thousand hours (or substantially less!)your favorite/most said word(s) will be "huh"or "What!". My 706 has a nice 'quiet' whistle. The 1256 has a prettyloud roaring whistle. If you want a turbo for sound effects,or 'cool factor',I would advise against. If you want a few more ponies,or better fuel economy, not a bad idea.

Unless you are good at fabricating and want something exotic, look for a M&W kit up for sale.

I have a working tractor with one on it and two spare turbos kits (which I am not looking to sell at this time) so I have some experience with them.

Someone has a kit on ebay complete with a finned aluminum oil pan for $3200, I don't know if that is reasonable or not these days.

Yep ! I have a high pitched noise all the time I hear that might drown out a turbo whistle. Like an emergency broadcast test all the time.

you've been a good help. When I posted earlier everyone told me I was stupid to turbo it but don't think some people know what thyre talking about. Tim S. has helped me out a bit with the turbo thing and he has done several 4020s by what he has said.

The whistle is just where it is spooling up to give you the boost. No big deal. Just get a 4320 if you want a turbo and save the work.

Mainly looking for more ponies. Tim S. has a setup he does with 4430 intake and exhaust and 4320 elbow. If I would do that what kind of turbo should I get? Schwitzer 3ld 279 Schwitzer 3ld 229 AiResearch t04? Thanks

Tim S has posted several times on this, I think he used a manifold and turbo off a bigger JD, then fabricates an elbow.

It really looks slick and should be lower cost than buying a kit.
