Combine cleaning video

My brother's gas powered air compressor sure came in handy for cleaning dust off the combine this harvest. My yard is so sheltered by trees that it is hard to get any wind to take the dust away working at the shop. So with this portable unit I can park out where the wind blows and bring the compressor to the combine. Took me a bit of time starting as I did not have the switch in the right position to start without pressure.
Combine cleaning

Yes, I blow all the chaff and leaves out of my baler at the end of the season. Then pressure wash it. Then a spray down with oil on the knotters then roll used oil in and on the bale chamber. Grease all the zerts. My baler has to set outside. Can't hurt it to do all these things. Some just back them in a shed with the last bale still in the chamber and drag it out next season. just trying to head off any problems. I would suppose a combine would need blown off during the harvest also. Heard of several combine fires. gobble

Yes, good plan to blow off the combine dust each morning before starting but I don't always get it done. Got caught leaving the baler out this summer with a hay bale in it and plenty of rain. Broke a shear pin and slipped the pto on the tractor trying to bale after that because the bale chamber was all rusted and rotting hay. First time I've done that in a while.

I keep a leaf blower with me and blow mine off when I am dome for the day. Got tired of the blowers not starting or running out of gas so I bought an 18v blower.

I have a plug in leaf blower I can use at the yard but its a bit heavy to reach up high with or get into tight spots. I find nothing beats the long (almost 4 foot) nozzle on the air compressor to get all that hard to reach dust and chaff off a combine or any other machinery.

For years I've used my grain vac to blow off the combine before winter storage. I made an adapter so I can attach a 3-inch flexible rubber hose to the discharge pipe on the vac (after the cyclone is removed). I remove all shields and run the header and separator at idle speed blow off both the outside and the internals of the combine. Of course you want to be upwind (it helps if there's a good breeze blowing) so I do one side then turn the combine around to do the other side. It cleans off probably 95% of the dirt and straw, usually I just vacuum the hopper and the auger bed with a shop vac afterwards. I run the tractor at idle speed as well - the vac creates a large volume of pressurized air.

Jon Hagen got quite a laugh when I described my method on Agtalk years back. I think he envisioned me hanging onto the hose like an old cartoon character hanging onto a fire hose! Ha!

During harvest I blow out the rad and engine compartment with a regular shop compressor. I had a couple fire scares years back so always make time each morning.

Jim, I bet that vac does a good job cleaning a combine. They have a lot of power . Unfortunately I don't own one yet.
Six quarters of the land I farm is five miles from home so the combine is away from the shop compressor. I do still have electricity there but the little 3/4 hp portable compressor was slow and a pain to load up. Once this big one is loaded on the truck it stays there til harvest is done. Two man job to move it.

Yes I can see it'd be handy with your land spread out like that. All my land except for one quarter is close by so I'm able to bring the combine back to the yard each night.

(quoted from post at 20:35:20 11/30/16) Darn it Rusty, now I'm gonna itch and blow my nose for the rest of the night. LOL
I don't like the dust either but its surprising how much I can avoid by parking just right on a windy day so the wind takes most of it away. Plus the long extension blower on the air hose.
If its a quiet harvest morning though, I'm out of luck and just have to suffer the dust.
