As a kid I can remember how fantasfic the inside of a barn looked after the spray truck left. Then...you had to wash all of the lite bulbs, and florescent tubes, windows, and switch plates. One time it had to be in the winter time. Laugh you butt off to see white washed cows!

I white wash my dairy barn every year myself . I used to hire a travelling crew but , the last time they came in , blew down the dust and webs , then sprayed . The bill was $800.00 , I said for two hours work , and $20.00 worth of lime , that is just too much. So I put together my own spray rig and spray the barn myself, and keep my money for other things. Buddy of mine still hires his barn sprayed with white wash , this year he shelled out $1,000.00. I told him if he knocked down the webs and dust . I would have sprayed it for half.It isn't rocket science .

I can remember my Dad and uncle whitewashing our barn themselves too.We had a hand powered pump on a 10(?) gallon container.Seemed like Dad and I pumped it while my uncle sprayed.I remember the milk inspector leaving a note saying it needed done. And another time, after my uncle had quit farming with Dad,a traveling painter coming around and spray painting all the barns.Mark

Just as you said about the webs and dust. My dad borrowed a 125cfm air compressor and made a six foolt long wand out of a piece of 1/2 copper pipe. Took a hammer to the end a made a fan shape. Wow you never saw so much crud flying through the air! Did a real nice job and he looked like a snow storm.

Hi Bruce,,

Could you tell us more about whitewashing your barn. How do you apply the whitewash, like what kind of pump you use. How do you mix the whitewash, the recipe.
We used to have an outfit that would come around and whitewash the milking barn every couple of years and I remember when it dried it so bright and snow white. Like others have said it was a mess to clean up after they whitewashed but once dry it was so nice.
Thanks in advance for any help you can share.
Dick

Hi Dick, My whitewash rig is quite simple really. I used a 100 gallon Rubbermaid water trough that I had, and bolted some old boards across the middle . I then bolted a small jet pump , the kind that is mounted on it's own pressure tank , and comes complete with a pressure control switch. Plumbed a pipe with a foot valve down into the trough , about a inch off of the bottom . I just fill the trough about three quarters full of water , and add 2 bags of spray lime per batch. I use a Dry wall mortar stir paddle, in my half inch drive drill . Stir till I figure it is mixed well . Prime the pump before you mix in the lime. I use 100 foot of garden hose with a spray wand that I picked up at a garden center. The wand I have has a shut off on the handle , so if I need to stop spraying to pull hose or move to the other side of the barn , I can just shutoff the flow. None of this stuff cost too much , and is all available from a hardware or feed store . Some things to remember with white washing, Lime will burn your skin , and your eyes, wear some protection . Also fresh white wash doesn't look very white until completely dry, maybe a day or two after you spray it will look much whiter than the day you sprayed it on . And be sure to cover any thing you don't want white, hard to wash off once dry. Bruce

dont know why the video wontload . maybe if you go to you tube. and search. whitewashing the barn by dave wells.. . the set up is mine and as others said pretty simple i have a 185 cfm compressor i blow down with .and pump is a bean 2020 300 gallon tank. . gas powered. and about200 foot hose. wand is just a 3/8pipe witha tee jet 40 degree. #8. flat fan.. there is a differance in lime . hydrated works but im not fond of it. have better results with hot lime . calcium oxide .. . farms here in northeast pa are becoming far and few between . . i usually just do weekends.. . . how big a barn do u have to be charged. 1000 dollars ????? I charge around 9 cents square foot and dont measure . farmer usually knows how big his barn is .. far as i .know there is only one other in area that whitewashes ...... also have a pretty fair travel distance been out asfar as 100 miles or so

My dairy barn is right around 9,000 square feet. The custom guys blow down and cover windows and milk line before they spray the white wash on . Still takes me a few hours to clean up the mess and wash the light bulbs , and places on the milk line that didn't get covered well enough. So it really isn't too far off your price, maybe I am just cheap , but it seems a little stiff to me .Bruce

Neighbor has a couple 5 gallon pails of of burned out light bulbs he keeps for whitewash time. Put the dead bulbs in the sockets, let them get sprayed, then replace with the good ones.
