Be Sure To...

Be sure to check your smoke alarms. I went to replace the batteries in the 8 we have throughout the house and 4 of them I could hardly hear after replacing the batteries. They are hard wired to 110v system in our house with battery back up and the sounder has gone bad in half of them since the last "time change" when we replaced the batteries and tested them. Guess I'll replace all of them since they're all 18yrs old same as the house.

Good tip. Have never thought about the alarm being weak. We have several that are hard wired and a few that are battery only. Will have to check them. I also have several carbon monoxide detectors in the house because I burn coal and don't want to take any chances. An ounce of prevention !

Mine are the same. I better do a check on them. Fired up the pellet stove for the first time last night as we got down into the teens

We have a rental house in the fair city of Pontiac, MI. Local ordinance requires rentals to have smoke detectors each bedroom and living space. The detectors are required to be interconnected, AC powered with battery backup. There are a total of six smoke detectors in the house, and together they put out a deafening din when one goes off. The only way to disable them is to take them off the wall and remove their batteries. Which seems to be the first order of business when a new tenant moves in.

like food smoke alarms have expiry dates
older ones didn't
but the new ones I bought last yr did
not sure what the life range is on them but here insurance companies and fire inspectors are checking them at least both mine did this yr

Do the newer smoke detectors that are hardwired (110v with battery BU) send a signal thru the electrical circuitry (multi-plexing) in the house to trigger other detectors if one goes off?

The reason some of those expire codes are there is for the lithium batterys and the other is for the half life of the radioactive isotope. You should hear it here at work when all of the fire zones start blaring. Only thing you can do is stick your fingers in your ears!

Yes, that's why when you wire them the building inspector requires a separate wire, 12/3, for each smoke detector . The third wire makes connection at load center.
