Trying to keep dirt away from rod.

Because this cylinder is pointing up, it
seems to get a lot of dirt on wiper ring,
then rod seal leaks. Just rebuilt cylinder
again, decided to try a tub sock. Nothing
else it will keep my rod warm.

Don't they make a thin canvas sleeve that can be clamped over things like that? That sock's gonna be porous and let in fine particles.

Actually I put a plastic tube over cylinder first. Sock is to protect plastic.

If anyone knows of something made commercially, please post a link.

Would you consider a shotgun/rifle sock acceptable? Most are treated to protect the finish
against rust. Just a thought, jack

I never knew they made a protective cover for the cylinder rod but I see someone has posted they do. Being around equipment my whole life have never seen one. Makes sense though. Not to sound crazy but is there another reason the wiper/seal keep going bad ? Maybe rod slightly bent or bad chrome ? I know you have posted about this before but I can't remember exactly what was done when you rebuilt the cylinder. I like seeing your posts and the projects you do with it. Seems like a really handy machine.

I have had a few JD and Ford backhoe loaders and seen a lot more of them and I have not seen any such covers on the cylinders or a need for them. Wonder why you are having such an issue with your cylinders ?

You mostly see them on the swing cylinders of a rubber tire backhoe because of the chance of then being down in the dirt and rock.
They make rubber ones that are water tight for those that do a lot of work in water such as cleaning out a pond.
We use to load sand along the Mississippi at a company that used them on all cylinders.
The sand blows in the wind and sticks to the cylinders and is like sand paper on the seals.

John, Thanks. If you know if a link or who sells them please post. It's good to know there is a need to keep dirt and water away.

Mike,
What's the chances I have two cylinders start leaking at the same time. One on each terramite. Exact same one. I rebuild one of them 7 years ago, 1300 HOURS.

I think part of my problems were someone left out some backer rings. Wiper I rings were dirty and cracked.

Some cylinders leaked because stabilizer needed drilled and new split burnings.

Dirt and age are responsible for my wiper seals to dry out and crack. They were full of dirt. When wiper seal fails it won't take long for the rod O ring starts leaking.

If you have a backhoe, you are constantly chasing oil leaks. Sometimes cylinders, sometimes hoses. If you don't have a leak today, just wait there is always tomorrow.

John,
All the seal savers I've found on line are for moto cross bikes. I think my plastic cover and sock will work well, if I don't get it tangled up clearing brush.

I did a google search of "Hydraulic Cylinder Protective Boot" and got these.
There are many more.

For the price of them I would stick with your home made one if it works.
