Ferguson starter

I have a 1952 Ferguson to30 that I bought from a guy who had rebuilt most of it. He changed it from 6 volt to 12 volt. The starter is the original and it is just spinning and won't engage the flywheel. Wondering if anyone can help me figure out what's wrong. Another question is, does it hurt that it has been switched to 12 volt. It's worked fine for 3 years.

Thanks, I have the starter off. How hard is it to get the part out that needs fixing. As you can probably tell, I'm not mechanical at all.

After you do what said below and still doesn't help.....there's a chance that through the years the hammering of the starter drive into the flywheel ring gear , it will drive the ring gear back on the flywheel far enough that the starter gear will no longer reach the teeth on ring gear. You can either split tractor and drive back on or replace with new...or .. you can drill access hole in flywheel housing and use a long punch to knock gear back forward, rotating little at a time until seated back against shoulder on flywheel. Now you can either pray it stays there on it's own or in 4 equal spots around the circumference , use wire welder and spot a little "button" and it will stay there.

I put power to it and it won't engage, so if that means that the spring is broken how do I fix it. Is it something I can do or do I need to find a mechanic?
