Can I adjust pto on JD 2010????? Grinding

The PTO grinds when I try and put it in gear. Strange actually. I just got the tractor.
The hydraulics wouldn't work and it was low 14 quarts!!!

Anyway - is there an adjustment?????? Too many levers on this tractor!!! Ha!!!

Thx. Gary

Not familiar with the 2010.

Does it have live pto or do you need to push the clutch down to put the pto in gear.

If it is the later clutch may need adjusting.

There are I think 2 different adjustments on the 2010 pto. The one that might do you some good is at the back of the tractor on the bottom left side should be a round hole you insert a socket in and adjust a nut that changes the travel of the shift mechanism. However you need to keep in mind that the 2010is unique in that the pto clutch pauses the rotation of the drive shaft and at the same time moves the shift collar into the engaged position. That being said you Must pause to let things stop turning before completely engaging the pto or you can have the driven shaft and shift collar strip out. With luck yours can be adjusted but don' be shocked when adjusting it does not fix the issue. Had that happen on one I inherited the hired hands didn't treat it right and ruined the pto.

I HOPE your hydraulic problems are just the oil being low. The hydraulic system on the JD 2010 was a problem from day one. The JOY of changing that belly mounted pump just bring back memories. LOL Not good one either!!!

I hope your PTO issues are an adjustment. IF it has been used for very long with the engagement collar and splines grinding your in for an expensive repair. That is if you can find the one shaft. The one that come out of the clutch itself has been discontinued form JD since the mid 1980s. So good used ones are hard to find.

I am amazed that guys are buying these things. They where an absolute nightmare when they were new. Now they are 50 years old with all that extra wear and tear on top of a very poor designed tractor. I would be afraid to even use one for much as the repairs are labor intense and parts are high if they can even be found.

I quit working on them over 15 years ago as common repairs where getting to be more costly than the tractors where worth at the time. I know the value of them has risen due to guys collecting them but still they are problem child just waiting to explode.

Thanks for your comment ..
I am assuming it is live - I have really gotten it in "gear" yet

"clutch may need adjusting" .... is this the main clutch pedal linkage you are talking about?

Thanks

Gary

Thanks .... I will have to check that out ..
When you refer to the "clutch" you are referring to the foot clutch - aren't you?

thanks

Gary

I think I tried to help you with this already, but I'll try again.

The (goofy) 2010 PTO clutch has nothing to do with the foot clutch/main clutch/engine clutch. and it is an unusual/uncommon setup.

It is a separate sliding collar and dry clutch unit cleverly hidden under the operator's seat and the 3-point lift cover beneath that.

A this point, it would be better back away from any wrenches and stop to ponder until you've perused a copy of the operator's manual AND a service manual to see how everything is set up and supposed to function.

An I&T manual is a weak second to a factory service manual, but probably better than nothing.

Ditto what Bob stated about acquiring a JD service manual for your tractor. The pto control lever mechanism is very complicated as shown in photo below. When moving handle(key 1) forward one is actually applying pressure to pto clutch and engaging a shift collar(key 22 2nd photo)

A little grinding id normal.
Review the past post that explaines how it works. I JD service manual is a must as an IT manual is a joke....

No there's a separate clutch in the housing behind the transmission. All that clutch does is allow you to engage and disengage the pto. It's not one of deere's better ideas.
