Is this a good use for a 4x4?

Yep,I've had a couple of Chevys myself and had to do the same thing. You sure didn't want to shut them off.

In Kiwi-land that would be off the road. Without good parking brake, no 'Warrant of Fitness', i.e. not legal on the road and insurance cover would be invalidated. That door would also probably not pass inspection.

I used to work at a company where that was called a "Kramer Brake". On dump trucks! Now you know he name of the company.

Believe it or not: there are some states in the northeast that laws still require "chock blocks " on ANY semi that is parked. I have heard of cops using that outdated law for a "cash cow ".

The'02 was still like that. They put a stretchy link in so that the parking brake would "self adjust". It's absolute crap. I've asked 7-8 people with similar vintage Dodge 1/2 tons, none of their parking brakes work.

I just swaged a loop of cable to bypass the stretchy part, so mine works "OK" but there's no adjustment at that end any more.

yup, that's what I use on my Chevy '02 manual trans. On flat ground, I just put it in gear but if I'm on a slope or I want to leave the engine running in neutral, the 4x4 comes out of the bed and put to use. Been meaning to get the parking brake fixed, just haven't got around to it.
