4020 injector pump question

I have a 4020 diesel. Don't hardly use it anymore.
Got it out to sell it and it has problems running.

Haven't fired it up since last fall. When I did I
changed the oil and all the filters. New hydraulic
filters and new fuel filters. Put it back in the barn
and haven't started it since.

Started it a couple of days ago and it ran good for a
couple of minutes then began to lose rpms.

Put new fuel filters on again today. When I dumped
the filters out I had taken off it there was nothing in
the filters but diesel. No water. No trash.

I can make it run by taking the screw on the side of
the injector pump out. Runs good with screw out.
When I put the screw back in it takes a couple of
minutes and it loses its rpms again. Take the screw
back out and it runs again. Put the screw in and it
loses rpms. Tractor does not miss or smoke.

Hasn't been too long since pump was rebuilt.

Has my pump went bad??

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The check ball return connector is clogged OR the return line itself is clogged going back to the tank.
The check ball connector is the 1st connector coming out of the top cover on the inj. pump.
Remove it, blow it out w/ compressed air and reinstall..
Do the same w/ the return line.. remove the fuel tank cap and blow back thru the line TO THE TANK..
Try that..If you want it to run continuously and sell it.. knock the glass ball out of it and tell the buyer that he'll need to get the pump rebuilt very soon..
IF it hasn't been to long ago its been rebuilt.. maybe you'll get lucky and the fuel just gelled in the connector and/or return line and you can clear it out w/ air.
Good luck and I hope this helps..

Actually the elbow fitting with the check ball(key 29) that thepumpguysc refereed to is on the side of the 4020 inj pump.

Thanks Jim. I looked at the pump for a minute but
didnt see a fitting on top of the pump.

Isn't this the line that comes from the fuel filters to
the injection pump??

PumpguySC hit it on the head. No question you have a return fuel restriction. Either blown flex ring, or plugged ball check. 9 out of ten you will need to get the pump resealed. I personally think this unit would sell faster if you tell a buyer it has a rebuilt pump. I almost think you could add the cost of the pump work on top of the asking price and come out even. Much easier to sell something ready to rock n roll than something needing attention. A reseal only costs 350-450 bucks. This isnt much to add to the sale price. Most pumps I do the owner pulls himself. This saves on the labor bill. I have walked 100s of guys through the steps on how to R+R a pump on a 4020/4010. I can do it in less than an hour. Most anyone else should be able to do it in maybe double. It does help to know some steps that save lots of time. If I can help you in any way please fell free to give me a call. Good luck,,, Al 231/7570064

I would not think of trying to sell the tractor and it need the pump rebuilt. I want everything in order when I put it up for sale.

You're welcome. Fitting(key 30) is where line from fuel filter attaches to IP.
