Case 580ck advise/resolution

Thank you all for your helpful advise. I thought I would post
my resolution to my issue. I developed a very loud knock
incredibly fast while doing some light work. I killed the
machine and started to tear in. I found a ton of play in my
number three connecting rod. After thinking I was in for the
big one, I decided to poke around and see what everything
else looked like. I was surprised that pistons and sleeves
looked good. My connecting rods liked good and my crank
was not grooved. The issue was a missing connecting rod
bearing. I thought the worst and was prepared to pull it apart
and have crank and rods machined with new bearings.
Before I did that I thought for giggles I wold chuck in a
standard bearing and see where that left me. Well that didn't
work and there still was a tiny bit of play. So back to crank
machining idea. Before I did that I stuck some larger
plastiguage in there and it came out that an 030 bearing
would be close. I chucked it in, and boom no play. Put it all
back together and have put a few running hours on her with
no issues. I'm going to give this a shot and see what
happens, but I have sourced a used crank nd connecting rods
as a backup. We will see what happens. Thanks for all your
advise.

I heard stories about in the Model T days, they used to pull off a loose cap, file away some of the cap so the bearing fit better, put it back together and drive it until it started knocking again.

Hi my Dad had a different solution during the War, take some horse harness strap cut it to fit grease it up well and put it all back together and it was still running well a few years later when he traded if.
