Short Deer Season..........

Today is the first day of the rifle deer season in Nebraska. I nailed this one 13 minutes after it was legal to shoot. (1/2 hour before sunrise).

I got him about a hundred yards behind my shop, so it was quick and simple.

Rifle season opened here in Missouri this morning. I missed an 8 point due to having to wiat to make sure it had 4 points on one side and he was maybe 20 yard form me. Then about 30 minutes later I had 2 does come in and got one of them. If I had gotten either the buck and doe or both does my season would have been over. Have 2 tags to fill one any deer and one antler-less

That is amazing how you roped him with a chain and a tractor! Is that a legal method in your state?

Our doe tags are based on the county you hunt in. I farm in two counties and one is a 4 and other is 8. So I can get one buck and 12 anterless with out buying a tag.

I never dressed a deer but have butchered beef and hogs, Is this the usual way to hang a deer for dressing, I mean from the head? I am curious but not at all critical

You can do it either way--this way, in my experience, makes for a bit easier skinning, as you're working with the natural lay of the hair. However, thousands of deer are done every year head down--it all depends what your preference is. Most deer are field dressed on the ground, simply because you don't always have the luxury of a tractor and loader handy, but it sure makes dragging easier if you do, LOL!

I like them up by the head too. Makes it easy to drop all the insides into a bucket for disposal. Feet first makes it harder to get the insides out as you have to scoop to clear the ribs/chest cavity. Head up is a nice and quick way. Makes it easier to wash out too. The only reason for me to hang back feet up is if I want to do a shoulder mount. Hanging by the head/neck is not good for a shoulder mount as it damages the hair/head.

Nice buck. Our season (gun) starts on Nov. 20 and goes to Feb. 10. We can shoot 4 bucks/as many doe as desired. Just a few years back, we could shoot a buck and a doe a day for the whole season. Very open season. I have never understood why the Yankee states have such a short season? Do you have that many less deer than we do in the south? Just curious.

I like to hang them by the head makes for easier skinning for me.As I work down the deer I cut off the shoulders then the tenderloin and then the hindquarters and the 'sweet meat' in the inside of the lower back.I strip off the neck meat for the dogs as my wife says thats tough and strangy anyway.

You can usually get a tag good for 2
antlerless whitetail in the unit I'm in
clear through the season. Muleys, on the
other hand, you better be signed in and
ready to click "buy" the minute they go on
sale.

I'm just south and west of Goose.

As to the shorter season, I don't know. But
we can hunt Sunday's here, too, which gives
us another day.

Hunting in AZ is a waste of time. We have the draw system for an early hunt and a late hunt. There are permits for mulies and Coes white tail.( Buck only. No doe hunts in about 30 years.)One or the other depending on what you draw. You can apply for up to 4 hunts. I got my 4th choice for the 2nd hunt, mulie. In my draw hunt area there were 400 permits for the first hunt and 400 for the 2nd hunt. I scouted hard and saw one doe in one spot and 4 does in another. My hunt started last Friday and I have seen absolutely nothing after covering many, many miles on foot. Today I saw about 9 does and yearling does about 2 miles from my house. Hunt success rates are very low. I will probably never hunt AZ again. I will hunt in New Mexico with friends where success is almost guaranteed.
