Son and Grandson were here for awhile last night. Grandson is 11 and when he walked in the house he saluted me and said "THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE GRANDPA"---I am not one to flaunt my 3 years 9 months and 4 days I was in the USN but it made me feel GOOD. I served my time and got out and that was it. I have been a American Legion member for 43 years now and now the media has made it popular to honor the vets. The restaurants are getting on the bandwagon with FREE food for vets day. Our squadron-VS-27 was stationed in Norfolk Virginia and the joke was to watch for the signs that said "SAILORS AND DOGS-KEEP OFF THE GRASS"-That last picture is of my Dad and myself at the Waterloo airport. One of my favorites, he died 8-8-88. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY----Tee

Thanks to you and all who did serve. Dad was a Navy man. 6 yrs and some ,'52 to '58. Before I was born. Never talked much, but was very proud that he did. Only day he ever missed work, besides vac, was poppy day. Always took it off and wore his white hat to sell the flowers. I still have his hat and dress blues. Flag from his funeral is on my night stand.

Thank you!!!! I live about 45 miles from Norfolk, not my favorite place to visit as I'm just a country boy!! I did race as an AMA Novice in Norfolk Scope back in 1976 on the hockey rick after they melted/drained the ice off!! That was a short track!!

I was drafted in 1953 and I married my wife. Our daughter was born at Ft Bragg NC. Since I was drafted I was rehired back at Aberdeen Proving Ground testing military vehicles. Hal

This picture was taken when testing the M1 Abrams Tank. There were two vehicles tested one built by General Motors and one by Chrysler.
Both vehicles were tested. Hal

My grandson and his wife. They're currently stationed at LeJeune.

My son served as well, US Army, qualified Airborne and got his Ranger tab, transferred to the Mechanized, medical discharge as an E6 after a training accident tore up a shoulder and a knee.

Thanks for your service. That picture brought back a memory of when I left North Island, San Diego Ca. for the Philippines. Mom, Dad, and my girl friend were there to see me off. What a big adventure for a farm boy from a small town. Stan US Navy 64-68 VP-48

If my memory serves me right you probably had the P-3's--????----------Thanks--Tee

Tee. When I joined VP-48, the squadron had 12 P5m's. They were a very large sea plane. Water land only. About a year before I got out we did get the locked P-3's It was quite a different engine from the 18 cylinder radial. The P-3's had what we called the suck, and blow engines, but they did work quite well. Stan

Dennis,

Thanks for the pictures and narrative. I had two brothers-in-law that were ATs. One retired as a Senior Chief and the other as a Warrant Officer. I was a lowly old Second Class Petty Officer when my enlistment ended in 1966.

Mr. Fawteen and I did the same kind of stuff and even served at the same installation but at two different times. At the time I was in, the rate was called Communications Technician, but the name was changed to something else later.

The Navy was one of the few good decisions I've made in my life. LOL.

Hal, Is that a Leopard Hull leading the pack there?

As I look back, I would say the Navy was a good decision for me also. It was 4 years out of my young life, but I will never have a opportunity to experience what I did. Stan

US Navy here too. I went in out of high school in '86, and got out in '92. Went in under a special program that promoted me to E-4 upon completion of several special schools before going to the fleet. Once there I put on E-5 a year into my tour on the Pratt, and then E-6 about a year and a half into my time on the America. Got out doing shore duty at Naval Station Ingleside, down in Texas.

Served aboard the USS William V. Pratt (DDG-44) and the USS America (CV-66) on which I got to take a trip to the Red Sea, and Persian Gulf for Operation Desert Shield.

I saw pics of the Pratt being scrapped and chopped up, and others of the America taking hits from various projectiles and being sunk in about 900 feet of water. Seeing both die like that made me sick. Then Charleston and Ingleside both get shut down. The only place I was stationed for any length of time that's left open, is Norfolk.

In the end it's sad to see the state of our military now days. I pray it's brought back to be the world dominate force it once was.
