Grass and weed killer

I used a jug of RM43 this year to keep the fence rows clear and this fall the grass has grown back in. Does anyone have a recommendation for a product with better results. I bought at TSC, this is the first year I've tried ag chemicals from them. I'm not impressed, the reviews stated folks had much better results

Rock Salt works really well. It'll last about all summer and it's cheap. It keeps the weeds and grass out of my asparagus patch all
year. I apply twice a year.

Krovar does very well to sterilize the ground. It is a powder to be mixed with water and works best when applied before or during a rain. If concerned about leaching, it can leach into the soil adjacent to your are. I did a 3/4 acre field 6 years ago and it has kept the weeds down.

Most grass and weed killers are a contact killer, meaning it only kills what it is there and sprouted at the time, there are a few exceptions but they should be labeled accordingly. You can find extended time products at most places and they should be advertised as such. Look for vegetation killer products labeled for walk paths, driveways and fence rows etc, ortho ground clear is one I have used, it its in a black gallon jug.

Soil sterilants are another option, some products are good for 5-10+ years if used correctly. These products can work very well, or too well sometimes. They can kill trees or shrubs if their root systems are in the soil that you treated, probably not a problem for a narrow application along a fence row. These products can also leech through the soil or travel in water run-off, especially in real damp soil or used before a rain. I use this stuff in gravel lots and drives and you don't have to worry about too much for years.

There use to be something called hyvar that killed for years but that stuff would run off. I spray my fence rows with round up and what ever I am spraying corn with that year and have a season long kill.

I have a graveled driveway that sees very little actual use. Weeds and grass threatened to totally obscure it. Common weed killers such as glyphosate did a good job, but I had to repeat the application several times throughout the growing season. Then I found a product called "Barrier". One application in the spring is good for all year.

You do realize that a lot of these chemicals are salts and will really rust wire fences.
Read up use corrosion issues. I knew a guy that sprayed Roundup on fences every time the weeds and grass grew up. Fences had to be replaced after a few years.

But what about the asparagus?

Asparagus LIKES salt. The salt does NO damage to asparagus.

We use both <a href="http://www.monsantoito.com/pages/roundupproconcentrate/">Roundup</a> and <a href="http://www.dowagro.com/en-us/range/products/remedy-ultra">Remedy</a>.

Hope this helps.

RM43 is mostly Roundup (glyphosphate). Glyphosphate only works on growing weeds and only keeps them down for about 3 months. I can see why you're not impressed because they advertise "for up to one year."

Yes, that's what has me disappointed. I thought I had done enough research to find something local that would get me up to next spring. No such luck. Round-up is the old standby, guess I may have to go back to it and make several passes each summer to keep the weeds down. Just bought a fence charger (Cyclops Super) and would like to set it up without grounding due to the grass and weeds.

Local farm stores carry 41% Glyphosphate at a reasonable price. Agree on the two-three applications per year. I started mixing with 2-4-D on
the first application getting much better results. Both are tolerant of each other when mixed.
