Finally done insulating the sliding door on the shop. Have to weatherstrip the bottom yet and a little on the top sides, but at least the door is done before winter.

What did you use?

When mine was built, they put blocks of styrofoam between the 2x4's, then covered with luan...which is warping and hanging up when we open and close the doors.

Looks really nice and tight fitting too. I gave up on sliding doors and only put in overhead ones with a footer under them.

Have your wife make a +-4" dia. bean bag sock for the bottom. It works great in the cold and comes out in the summer. I have them on both my sliders as does my neighbor. I think they are better and will last longer than any seal you install (both of mine are going on their 14th year).

I used some of the purple colored foam from Menards. On all of the sections, except the bottom I used one layer of 1 1/2" and a layer of 1" that brought it flush with all of the frame. The bottom I only used the 1 1/2" as there is a guide on one end that locks the door in place when closed and when open so that section had to have clearance. I also filled the frame with the same foam. The outer cover is some non-fiberglass panels from Menards. The upper panels are put on with screws, so if any have to be replaced I can replace them without replacing the foam.

I wondered about something like that to just put in place and take out when needed. Now the only thing I have to find is...a wife to make me one. ;)

Since you don't have a wife, you could consider using foam pipe insulation. I use that, with old broom handles inside for stiffeners.

It is a NAPA made by Big Four, Im guessing from the early to mid 1970s. Works ok but is tired lol.

Go to Walmart - in the Toys or Pool sections they sell 4" diameter Plastic Foam "Noodles", some solid others with a hole down the center. Should work the same as a Bean Bag only lighter.
