Watching the sale reports in the Lancaster farming newspaper,,for two weeks in a row now,,turnips have brougt between 3.50 to 5.00 per half bushel at the wholesale market,,,,Get them grandchildren to grow turnips! lol

Larry, How would you prepare them for eating? My folks would just boil them and eat them that way but I could not. Can they be fried like potatoes? Mashed like potatoes? Haven't seen a turnip since the folks passed in the early 90's.

You can put them in stews or pot pies, mash the boiled ones and add seasoning, or slice them thin and saute with some garlic and seasoning. Just a couple things I do with them here. If you do it with a potato, you can probably do it with a turnip. They add a lot of moisture to traditional pasties if you want to try that. Use your imagination and have fun with it.

Rather than using potatoes we use turnips when we make a roast. Just peel them & cut them up in the sizes that you would normally cut up a potatoes.

Honestly, I don't very often. I like them but there is just not enough around to make them a staple. You have to admit though...better than rutabaggers!

If you can grow a turnip then you could have grown a potato. And if you grow a potato you have real food for people, not critters.

If they're still crisp I like them sliced raw about 3/8s thick and eat them like radishes along with my meal.
My first wife cooked them like cheesy scalloped spuds and they were fantastic. gm

Sounds like they can be used the same as potatoes in most ways. Mom And Dad both liked them only boiled so that is the only way she would fix them. I lived with them untill I got married 39 years ago and my Late Wife did not like them that way either but she had never had them so knew of no other way to prepair them. I as of the present would not even know where to look to get any so it was just a question if they could be fixed any other way.

jd ,,. someone musta cookt them wrong and forced you to eat em as a kid,. LOl ,.. the best way to eat them is with a ham hock and about 30 % potatoes 70 % turnips,i cut mine in 1 inch cubes and add the turnips once the taters are half cookt,..,,.my dad used to sell turnip greens on the Louisville hay market for 8 bux a bushel , when we were in hi school,.that was good quick money
