Roto tiller? Works for me for ruts say in the front yard.

In the trails? Just got an estimate of $1700 for gravel and such to fix up a 90 foot section of path we can only travel 1/3rd of the year the mud ruts have gotten so bad. ;)

Subsoiler won"t do much...only one shank. Try a chisel plow, field cultivator, or a disc. FC or a disc on a long chain lets you drive around the rut, on drier ground, and the machine will "wing in" to the close the rut. Spike tooth harrow works very well for that.

Preventing ruts takes tile, or sub-soiling to allow drainage. Closing existing ruts can be done several ways: using a back blade or box blade, Using a disk, Using a mold board plow set to take a leading point scarfing cut filling the rut, or filling scarfed soil into the rut from a truck/wagon. Of course one could use a spade and Pysical Training. Jim

Man o man it sounds as if it is time to invest in a little dozer. Go out and play with one of those. Drain tiles too or that black corrugated drain tube stuff.

Disk works if the ground dries out. Typically it stays wet and the disk becomes a packer and does more harm than good in my clay.

Chisel plow is about it, or moldboard plowing.moldboard can be tough in wet ground too though.

Some subs oilers are designed to not disturb the surface much, won't help. In any case again, still wet ground, hard to pull a deep subsoil machine through......

Ever watch a farmer disking the field at an angle to the rows? He is trying to level things out.

Ruts are a common occurrence around my neighborhood. This is a pic of this fall. The best solution is to wait til tey dry out then do your regular tilage and finnish with a cultivator with a drag on the back. Discs don't really move the dirt that much but a cultivator or chisel will drag dirt into the ruts.

Ha! Two years ago a neighbor was pulling a MX 275 CIH with duals all the way around with his backhoe boom because they couldn't get through tiling. Some fun, ain't it?
