Broken drill bit in a broken bolt.

While drilling out the broken bolts in the radiator mounting holes on my JD A, I broke a 1/8 inch drill bit off in a bolt. I can not grab the bit with the tools I have. Any one have any removal suggestions.

Thanks

Not sure if the bolt is broken off flush or not, but you might try to weld a washer and nut onto the broken bolt (with the drill bit in it). Allow it to cool completely, and you may be able to turn the bolt out.

If you can move it any at all I would try a set of hemostats or tweezers. Or maybe a pick and magnet. The key is make it move a bit so it not locked in place. Any thing yo ucan do to turn it back wards will help and then a strong magnet on the tip of a small screw driver etc to touch it and slowly pull it out

I'd try to weld a washer onto it also. By welding a washer to the bolt you aren't welding into a pocket first that allows a better weld and gets some heat into the bolt. I've removed 5 mm (.197") bolts doing this

The drill broke because its stuck so either a die grinder with 1/8 bit or the washer treatment and aftr
you get the washer fast then weld a nut on the washer.

If it is in cast iron you can blow it out with a torch. It is a little messy, but if you don't keep the torch in the hole too long it will blow out the drill, and the bolt. use a pick to clean up the threads. Seams cast melts at a higheer temp than iron. Stan

Have tried the hemostats, tweezers, magnets and pick. It is in cast iron. I have a torch but was hoping to avoid that route. May have to use it though.

Try a carbide ball end mill. Have used them a lot for broken bolts and even broken easy out. They will not chip out as easy as a carbide drill and
you can us it in a cordless drill.cuts like butter

I had an easy-out broken off in a bolt broken off in a casting. I took several small center punches and beat the living heck of the easy-out. I then started picking at it with an awl and tweezers. Beat the heck out of it again and picked again. Had to repeat many times, but it came out in pieces a little at a time.
