A method to get rid of bats

I was talking to a fellow this evening and he mentioned that he had bats in his house attic for over 50 years. Ever since he installed his Wi-Fi there is not one single bat around.

WoW! We had them in my dads shop living in the top of a concrete wall with no cap. We closed them out but the smell remains faintly to this day, twenty years later.

Can't understand WHY anyone would want to get rid of bats. Those suckers keep mosquitos and other annoying bugs under control. Yeah, I know, they fly into your hair (BS) and their poop is the most toxic item on the planet. Just sayin'.

As good as people make them out to be, I still can't put up with them. I had a barn full a few years ago. They hung in the rafters, and crapped on every thing below. When they left they circled in the barn squirting out liquid poop before they left. It fell on tools and anything else. This group didn't make the return trip to Mexico where they go for the winter. I had good luck this summer with an electronic pest control gizmo. Never had any luck with them keeping mice away, but sure did the job on bats. Just chased them over to the old shop where they crap on everything.

I just purchased a bat house. I want them around to eat insects. They eat their weight in insects each day, sometimes more. That explains why there is such a large amount of
poop. They have no way to get into my buildings so we will get along fine.

Friend of mine has 3 that hang under his deck. He enjoys watching them catching insects in the evening. Says he just cleans up the poop so its a fair trade.

I wouldn't want to be the person that killed the last bat on this planet.

Bumblebee: How did you get the bat to use the bat house???? I have them in the attic in this house. I want to move them out but I like them around I just want them out of the house.

Once they have set up a roost they will try to keep coming back to "home". Approaching winter they are close to hibernation so you may want to try to get them out asap, or they may die. You can try making a bunch of noise, using bright lights or spray water on them to run them off. You will need to seal or screen the holes they can use to get back in, the can fit through very small places. If you want the keep them around then build some bat boxes for them to find a new place outside.

Are your bats like these? They have a wingspan of around 2' and around 30,000 moved into Bendigo, Australia a few years ago. The stence was horrendous and you had to use umbrellas when walking in the park.

Was walking out of an old gold mine near here years ago. Bats would fly right up to my face and turn around. Reached up to get a small rock outcropping and it was the fuzziest rock I ever grabbed. I never went back in that mine.

They all died in our area 3 years ago. White nose syndrome - a fungus grows in them over the winter while in caves etc and kills them off.

We had years of fighting with them in attics etc then they all just disappeared.

I have my doubts that the disappearance was caused by Wi-Fi, bats echolocate using sound waves not radio waves. More likely White Nose Disease, a fungal infection that leaves white crud on their noses and is wiping them out. I used to have many in my area, but the last several years virtually none to speak of. I do have one that seems to migrate through the area in the spring and fall. As compared with a small residential colony that lived in the barn year round. There is supposedly a cave like structure in a damn on a river in northern lower Michigan where thousands of the little buggers overwinter. This brings them into close proximity to one another and facilitates the spread of the disease.

I personally like bats. However there was a lad up in Allegan county that got bit about three weeks ago by a rabid bat. A lot of people fear bats for their potential to carry rabies though the odds are extremely low of encountering one. I heard something like less than 1 tenth of one percent. That being said, according to the local news, there were 37 animals in Michigan that have tested positive for rabies so far this year, 34 of them were bats. JD

I guess that's my problem! I built a couple of houses 10 years ago, gave one to a friend and put one up at the cabin. He said he had bats in his, no
sign of any in ours.

Right; one of the few things my Dad talked about concerning his time in the Pacific during WWII. Those things creeped him out.

Kind of sounds like the woman that called the radio station and said they should put
the deer crossing signs in places people dont drive or in a school crossing
zone..... it was a real call. lol I think if you look up Donna the deer lady on
youtube you can hear it.

Around here, if you put up a bat house, cat
house, snake house, bird house or any other
habitat house it will be overrun by fire
ants in no time.
