Allis C Stuck or Not - ENGINE

Okay .. this sounds crazy and maybe I am just hoping too much for the best!!
I have had a number of engines that were "stuck" .. everyone - that I have had have come loose - only ONE even smoked ..
I have an old Allis (1941 or so ) stuck engine ... have soaked it a long time .. in everything I could think of ....
although it feels locked up .. (it has a sickle mower on it too) ... it just doesn't FEEL like a stuck engine .. almost like it is stuck in a gear or pto or something . PUSH THE CLUTCH IN it rolls fines!!
Now I know I am probably dreaming . but any ideas about what it COULD be . . or do you think it is JUST stuck !!

Thanks much
Gary

If pushing the clutch frees it to roll, it is not a transmission problem unless it won't roll in neutral. Then it is more a shift linkage problem. But if it will roll with the clutch down, it is not in 2 gears at once.

At the same time, pushing the clutch will free the engine to turn even if the transmission wont. And that it rolls with the clutch down, in gear, also proves the clutch is not stuck!

Something else to look at, if the transmission or PTO were locked up, and the engine was free, you would see the engine turn just a little and spring back as the slack in the transmission and the shock springs in the clutch compress and rebound.

Do you know any history on it? Could the engine be locked up or seized instead of just stuck?

I don't know if your tractor has a magneto on it or not but I ran into an A Famall one time the the engine was stuck and wouldn't turn at all. What I found was that the impulse coupling on the magneto blew up and all the broken parts locked up the magneto and that was what was keeping the engine from turning. I replaced the magneto with a different one and all was well.

Thanks much . for your comments .. No ... I don't know much about the tractor at all ..
I picked up a JD H at the same time .. the JD H was in the barn and the engine was free - the Allis was outside ... it was about 25 degrees in Michigan when we picked them up ... the exhaust wasn't covered ... on the Allis . it seems like - my boys found the brakes on the tractor were frozen down and loosened them somehow ..

I have NOT worked a lot with it because I didn't want to break something .. and the more I thought of it .. I remembered that I shift it into neutral then the tractor will roll .

I think it is time to pull it in the garage and look into it more . but it could be seized .. no reason to believe it isn't ..

For some reason .. it just seemed stuck .. although I have never had an engine that was seized ..
(Respectfully) .. the people I got the tractors from didn't know hardly anything about tractors or these tractors .. they had been their granddad's I believe ... and wanted to get rid of them ..
Thanks again . Gary

Yes Mike .. it does have a magneto . and tomorrow after work . I am going to pull it real quick . never thought of that !!
Thanks much

yes it does . and obviously a water pump ....

I may be ALL WET . ... but this - to me - seems like it would be something like this .

I will check them tomorrow ..... easy to pull off .

Thanks SOOOO much ,

Gary

#1 pull all the spark plugs out and try to spin it over. If you have oil or what ever in the cylinders and try to turn it over it can/will hydro lock.
#2 the C has a clutch lock lock it down so as to take the transmission PTO hyds etc out of the system
#3 loosen up the fan belt so as to make sure the water pump or generator is not locked up

Hi Gary Maybe you just answered your own question " exhaust wasn't covered" my guess is it's probably had rain water go down an open exhaust valve and you got rust/water in a cylinder locking it up. I got a Fordson P6 diesel here sat for over a year with "stuff" in the cylinders. The crank pulley moves about a 1/16th" like it did when it came here, and thats it Solid even rocking it in gear every month or so. My thinking on this one is the cut off coke can shoved over the manifold elbow, has not been there as long as the water thats got in a cylinder and rusted it.

I don't want to take it apart as with our Canadian winters I'm afraid the sleeve and blocks cracked, but one day the heads gonna have to come off for a look. I got a Ford county here "stuff in the cylinders won't help that. The guy I got it from said his dad seized it solid after an oil change, when he was hauling bales on the highway about 25 years ago. maybe that could be your problem to if you have zero movement on the crank and no history..
Like you say time for a look into Pandora's box, It might get scary quick,Good luck.
Regards Robert

Hi folks about 40 years ago a friend of mine bought a Farmall A with a siezed engine so we jumped up and down on the crank to try and start it. While we was doing this his son sat on the tractor and pushed the clutch in and George who was a little fat man fell on the floor and we all found it wery funny. About 12 years ago I fully restored my BN and found the pin int the top shaft of the gearbox witch had half fell out on Georges tractor. MJ

From what you described it sounds like the engine is locked up. Have you drained the engine oil and looked to see if there is any water in the oil. If it has set outside with an open exhaust there'll be water in the oil which is a good indication why the engine won't turn.

pull the spark plugs and with a mag lite you can look and see if the walls are rusted up if they are you will not get it loose without tearing engine apart.

Thanks Robert .. I didn't want to either .. but it looks like that is one of the options I will have to try IF the others don't work ....
