Rotary Cutter for 35 HP Massey Harris

I have bothered equipment dealers, have tried on my own, but can someone tell me of a bush hog on the market that is 7 or 8 foot wide, PULL TYPE with manual height adj? Don't care what color. 35 HP Massey Harris 33 from early 50s. Have had opinions so far that I could handle a modern 8' 2 spindle unit but have also been told I would have trouble with a 8' single spindle unit. Just got this 33 back after selling 25 years ago and would like to put a cutter behind it, old or new. New to this forum and located in Shreveport Louisiana.

Whew, it depends what you are cutting, rough brush or thick grass as tall as the tractor, or mowing a grass area every 4-6 weeks.

I would expect a 35 hp tractor to have trouble with an 8 foot brush hog at some point, underpowered. But it depends what you are cutting I
guess. Do you have live pto on that model tractor? Boy without would be even tougher......

Your tractor would kinda be sized for a 6 foot maybe. A twin spindle would pull easier I'm sure.

Since you are looking for pull type, not 3pt, the weight won't matter.

I don't have any brand suggestions, I run an old old 5 footer on the back of my 27hp tractor. Rally don't know why I'm replying, I've been no help
at all to you, sorry!

Maybe cuz you"re trying to be helpful, instead of looking out at the misty, crappy day? LOL

I agree, at 7 feet wide, it"ll be hard to find. I think I"ve seen some used JD advertised, but I"m sure others are made. Still, I"d want more than 33 ponies in front of it. And 2 spindles would cut easier.

-Boy- has it been crappy miserable wet cloudy weather, and my mood very very much reflects it. I've been trying very hard not to show it out on the ag forums, it's so easy to reflect ones mood totally unintentionally ranting at someone. I was doing fine through most of this long farming year, but the last 20 days kinda did me in for mood. At least I know it..... ;)

I best go crawl back under my (moss covered by now) rock for a while......

Here's a 7 footer just up the road from you.

I would not even consider anything bigger than a 6' cutter for any 35 HP tractor. Even that will be marginal in some cover.

Thanks for the help so far. I apologize for not being more clear. Yes, I was using the term bush hog in a generic way. I should have known better than that. I am not new to this subject. I was of the impression that any twin spindle, modern rotary cutter would be harder for my 35 horse pto to turn? Not so concerned with pulling it except of coarse if it was really heavy. The pasture I have in mind is way high now but I would plan to service it more often if I had proper equipment. I have cut it about 4 times now with my Super Z mid mount including 2" saplings in abundance but it is of course slow and way bumpy and not the best of treatment to it or myself. Will check out the link in Texarkana. I had an old "Bush Hog" , I think 7 foot but it went to my son to use with his H Farmall he just bought.

That cutter would have been sweet! Guy says it was operational and even had recent gear box seals. But they are sold already. Price was right too. I do not know that I can justify a cutter over $3,000 and an 8' two spindle runs 6,000 and up.

Just get a Woods twin blade mower, about 7', and get a ratchet hoist to raise it in place of a remote cylinder.....

wilson ind.: brush hog??? wrong also, the proper name would be a rotary mower if we are trying to educate someone politely.

Why not Brush Hogg? Used to be two sisters in Texas Ima and Ura Hogg.Bush Hog has become a generic name, like every older person I knew growing up called all refrigerators a Frigidaire.

I do have a life, a very great life. Should you want to purchase an automobile, a very nice one say a Cadillac would you ask for a Chevrolet? Not knowing where you live surely more than 99% do use proper names when buying equipment.

Instead of starting a new thread, would like to ask a question. I bought a salvage PTO shaft assembly (that mounts to rear end of housing) that seller is almost 100% sure came from a 33. I am almost 100% sure my tractor is a 33. No serial number search yet. The one I bought has a drilled hole in the clutch end that mine does not have (may or may not matter). Other difference is mine has a pressed on gear with a circle clip on the other end just inside the mounting housing that the one I bought does not have which would be a no-go. Were ALL model 33 PTO shafts the same? Live PTO came out with the 333 and I know I do not have that. I owned and used this tractor over 25 years ago so it is not that it is new to me, just a lot of years.

Down here.. they are shredders or brush hoggs. no one knows what a ""rotary cutter"" is.

7 foot mowers are rare as they are usually single box mowers and are therefore build very long and then to vibrate apart..unless very heavy duty,, and if very heavy duty, then tend to be too heavy for 3 point use. And they are very hard ton a 35 hp gear box and tend to tear them up quickly SO> require an extra heavy gear box and drive shaft with a slip clutch that also ads to the maylee. SO>........ its either a 6 foot or a double or triple box 8 foot mower. And if your running 33 hp, a 6 foot mower will be a bit too big in medium to tall grass but just fine if you mow every 3 weeks or earlier. Or you run it a foot of the ground...

Welcome BigK, I hope you enjoy the YT website and receive as much help here as I have over the years.
To help, maybe, clarify something; it should be noted that in most of the south and especially here in Louisiana, we use "bush hog" as a generic term for any brand of "brush hog". So BigK was culturally right even if he may have been considered to be technically wrong.
