57 Ford 621 engine power loss

I have a 621 Workmaster that is experiencing loss of power and backfires quite a bit. Would a new rotor and distributor help or is this possibly a larger problem with the valves? Any help would be appreciated and I thank you all in advance.
 
Trouble shoot then parts NEVER the other way around.

#1 check the plugs and make sure there not all carboned up. If you find them to be black and oily or sooty replace them. I now use the NGK 3112 plugs since the champs and auto lite are not very good any more.

#2 make sure you have a good blue/white spark form the center wire of the distributor cap and at all 4 plug wires. If the spark is weak check the points and maybe clean them or replace them and check the point gap it could have slopped.

#3 Make sure you have a good steady flow of gas from the carb drain plug. It should fill a pint jar in less then 3 minutes.

#4 do a compression test and make sure you have good compression on all 4 cylinder.
 
Before you spend (throw away) any money on parts,do some 'diagnstics'. Do a compression test,then check timing,and do a visual on the distributor(points,cap rotor) look at distributor bushings.A stuck/burned valve should be able to be heard. However,from your description,it could just be running very lean. pen the load screw a bit to see if it gets better. If this happened all of a sudden,a piece of crap may be plugging the fuel flow.If you dont have the skills,or the confidence to do yourself,enlist a friend to help.Find out WHY before you buy parts.
 
An exhaust backfire is usually ignition related, points, plugs, cap, etc.

A carb backfire is usually an indication of lean mixture or retarded ignition timing. Try a partial choke, if the performance improves, it is lean.

The timing can be effected by points set too close, or the centrifugal advance is frozen.
