Pertonix ignition trouble

4 cylinder tractor starts but one cylinder misses. If I change the position of the magnetic sleeve, the miss moves to a different cylinder. On that "dead" cylinder, pull the wire from the cap and get no spark jump at all. Anybody experience that - ever. Suggestions?

There are 4 magnets in the sleeve 90 degrees apart with gaps in between. Remove sleeve, take a small screwdriver and see if the blade of screwdriver will lift the magnet from all 4 positions

Thanks folks. Did as I was told and called Petronix. They told me what you all have said and to make sure that my power supply is good and that my dist. is grounded good. Just painted the tractor, probably a ground problem.

Sounds like a missing magnet to me if the gap is set properly. The screwdriver test should tell. If not, it may be that the gap is set too large and one magnet is not as strong as the others. I would think a ground would affect all cylinders.

Hope this is of some help.

They have quality issues. I had two fail on the same tractor last summer. I dealt with their tech department to verify the problem wasn't on my side. They warranteed it, the second one failed a month or so after so I went back to points. Other vendors are having high failure rates. I won't put in another one until they get their problems cured. Can you say junk? "Sure, I knew you could"!

Tossing the finicky "electronic switch" you have and putting a quality set of points in it's place will likely solve the issue for 10 to 15 years 'til the points need to be re-laced again.

(The unit so many are fond of is, in reality, an "electronic switch", and has very little in common with a modern electronic ignition system that would be found on a car or truck.)

I had this very thing happen about seven years ago. I called Pertronix and they said 'Put an O-Ring under the magnetic part, raising it up just under 1/8". If that didn't fix it, call them back. Well, that fixed it and I have put almost 30,000 miles on it. Oh yeah, it needs a 12 volt source, NOT the wire that's been resisted down to 6 volts.

He DID call Pertronix after initial post. I'll bet that all of the replies he received here were WAY more help than what Pertronix told him! There is no substitute for experience and sharing of information. 8)

Problem solved. Simply moved the pick-up away from the magnetic sleeve just a fuzz. I noticed some scuffing on that sleeve and figured contact between the sleeve and the pick-up was not a good thing. Modified the position of the pick-up just a bit, runs like a watch. Thanks all for your input.
