ot: when i get (got) older....meant in humor

Aww heck,

When can I claim to have fully become a dinosaur?

1. When all cars no longer need a pedal-pump to set the choke?

2. When my whiskers are the color of an autumn sky (when it's rainy)?

3. When I can "dial" an existing home phone that works?

4. When I spend a lot of time of YTMAG...no offense intended; I like the opportunity to discuss various/dubious/reliable repairs and techniques.

5. When I wear the same "outfit" nearly day in and day out.

6. When I know I need more Bible, probably for the betterment of all that happen to know me.

7. When I should "give" good advice? (really)

8. When I know a tad about points?

9. What's a bias ply tire?

10. Why I know why car steering wheels were bigger "in the day"?

11. When I don't have to think about what the third pedal is for.

Feel free to add,

D.

A three speed rear on a bike or coaster brakes.
A starter button on the floor.
A hi/low headlite button on the floor.
Backup lites were an option.
Seatbelts too.
A choke and idle speed set knob on the dash.
They installed a rotary phone today and we no longer have a party line!
We walked almost 3/4 of a mile to wait for the school bus.
We got a used tv from a friend and it had UHF channels on it.
We just installed a glass pipeline! I can also remember the day about 12 years later when we took it out to sell when dad got rid of the girls.
I can remember when there were dairy farms all over the county. There us only one now.
Am I old enough?

rrlund,

Up to a year ago, I have had some drive-able as well as licensed. But, I am willing to be YTMAG "one-upped" on responses. Let's hear what round-bulbed vehicles you have...

My post was to stir up some early evening conversation regarding the fast-passing of time and mechanicals.

Thanks for the reply,

D.

Have 2 here. One hasn't been driven in 3 years (1940 IH 1 1/2ton truck) the other gets driven often (61' Chevy 3/4 ton).

When you've memorized the shift pattern on a column shift truck and don't get it hung up between 2nd and 3rd? When you not only know what a heat Houser is, but how to put one on a tractor in less than 15 minutes? When someone asks you "where's spit corner?" and you know precisely where (and what) it was. And lastly, what I think is a dying art, building and keeping a fire in a living room stove without either roasting the occupants or waking up freezing at 3 in the morning. I could go on and on.

Humm. Like turn the key then stomp the starter on the floor just above the gas. or change to high beams with your left foot. Some times you put it in High and hold the clutch down with the right foot and roll start it down the drive by pushing with your left foot. Fixed your own flats by patching the tube and pumping it up with a bicycle pump. Vac. windshield wipers that quit working when you drove up hill. AC was a crank out windshield and rolled down windows. The battery was under the floor board. One tail light was factory equipped. Top speed was 50 although the speedometer went up to 80. And WHAT are SEAT BELTS.

I have two Ranger pickups. One is a 1997 model and my "new" one is a 2005 model. About three or four years ago, I took my grandson, who was about 13 or 14 years old at the time, someplace in my 1997 Ranger. Shortly after we pulled out of the driveway, he asked me, "Hey Grandpa, how do you close this window?" (Referring to the window in the door next to him).

He told me that he had never seen a window crank before, and had no idea how to roll-up a window.

When you give driving directions like: Go down this road to where the old creamery used to be, turn left onto old highway #__, go about 5 miles and the place you're looking for is right across from where so and so used to live. You can't miss it.

Had a friend like that he told me to turn at the old ice plant and then...I told him the old ice plant was torn down before I was even born!LOL He thought for awhile before saying that I was right. I sure miss some of those old timers. Tom

Let's see, tractors not included there are four vehicles with round lights. The 55 Chevy 4400 grain truck (foot starter), the 74 Ford F600 grain truck, and the 58 GMC 370 grain truck. The GMC really counts as it has FOUR round headlights and the two high beams are the T3 originals. I did upgrade the 58 to two brake/tail lights as it is used quite a bit. The 55 still has its original single.

Dang nabbit - I just realized I forgot cars. There's a 67 Beetle, a 69 Beetle, a 77 Beetle convertible, and a 69 Karmann Ghia. Those all have round headlights.

"When can I claim to have fully become a dinosaur?"

I don't remember.
I would look it up if I could read my notes.
That is, if I could remember where I left my notes.
What were we talking about?

Lets see, there's a '60 Chevy Apache pickup, two '55 Chevy 210/2Dr wagons, my '78 Jeep J-10, a mid 50's 440 Deere dozer, and my HB210 A/C mower.

A couple.

Feel free to add,

D.

When you know what the third stick is for in an old Jeep. You have a 4x4 truck that has the manual lock in hubs. When you had to pull the knob out on the dash to turn the head lights on. Driving a vehicle or riding a motorcycle that had no turn signals and you had to use hand signals. When you had to unhook the chains to lower the tailgate on your truck.

Just a few. Dang I am getting there... older that is

Thomas Jefferson said a man is known for his actions, not his age, and ever since he told me that I quit worrying about it.

A few more I thought of:

You actually know how to change a flat tire

Know what a bumper jack is and know how to use one

Know how to use a 4 way lug nut wrench

Remember and have used to speakers that hang on your window while watching a movie at the drive in (thinking Smokey and the Bandit # 1)

Know what a feeler gauge is an know how to gap points and plugs with one

Know how to change the oil and lube your own vehicle

Know what a bias ply tire is

Remember when riding in the back of pickups was legal

Have sat in the rear facing seat of the old 60's station wagons

Can actually shift a 2 speed rear end propery

And not only use a two speed but split shift every
gear when you have a load on the way to the
elevator. Kids now days don't plan far enough
ahead to take the rearend into low before they
make the corner so that the downshift to third
doesn't catch. I can remember driving school bus
on trips and being loaded enough to split all of the
gears, too. I spent enough years doing it in school
buses that I can do it in my sleep.

What about knowing what to do with a "Working
5th" transmission? I looked forever to find one in a
grain truck and never did nail one down. Oh well.

Yep, hand-crank Telephone and your "number" is Two Long & One Short Ring. 7 inch Television screen with a huge, thick magnifying glass hanging in front of it, so you didn't have to sit immediately in front of the screen to watch the Red Ryder or Lil Abner TV shows.
