Farmall H battery

I have read a lot of tractor discussion and youtube videos to try and find an answer to my question on this issue. No luck so if I missed a tractor discussion on this I am sorry for asking this question again. I have a 47 H according to the serial # and I can't figure out the right battery. I know it is set for a 6 volt. Problem is when I put 6 volt battery on it amp gage shows discharge. Small 12 volt battery from my camper shoes a positive charge. The generator is a delco remey but the regulator from what I have read and youtubed sits next to or on the regulator. Mine is on the gas tank bracket that is directly in front of the steering column post. Would this regulator be factory or did someone change it. It sure does look factory and I am out of answers on this issue. Any thoughts on it would help me understand to stick with small 12 volt or figure out what to make it charge with 6 volt. If I had a meter gage to read the volts I realize that would help but if anyone knows the if regulator is in wrong place let me know. Thanks for the help, Mike

Have you hooked the 6 v battery using positive ground, negative to starter?
That's the way my H is.

regulator is in right place under the gas tank. Need to get a small meter at Tractor Supply, Harbor Frieght , Lowes Home depot or Menards. Is your tractor a magneto or battery spark? If magneto, then only the starter and /or lights are involved . with the charging system and could be either 6 or 12 volt.

I will pick a meter gage up. Need one anyway. Thanks for the help. The battery is backwards as far as the hook up goes. The wiring is very poor extremely poor on this tractor and it's a wonder it even starts. Something that can be fixed just need too tinker with it some more. MJ
