1979 1086 1st or 2nd gear let out clutch it dies L or H rang

My Dad has a 1979 1086 IH he was bailing hay and tractor just quit pulling , got it to shop and the TA was out and it to clutch out too. Put it back together and in 1st or 2nd gear when you let out clutch it dies, but same in high range it dies. 3rd and 4th gear works fine in high or low.Jacobi and other owners around us and the guy who repairedit does not know why this is happening. Any ideas ? Thanks

Did he put a ta in it too if he did he had
the speed transmission and counter shaft a
part and has something put together wrong
it's not in the range transmission since
3rd and 4th work

A 1066 will not come out of 2nd when you go
to 3rd if the second gear sliding gear is
put in backwards.

I dont know if the man he had repair it took the transmition out or not. The mechanic has 966 pulling tractor and he said he did not know what was causing that to happen . Push clutch in and put in firstcor second , when you let out it dies. Low or High range . I will have to find out if he pulled tranny out and messed with gears. Cant you replace TA with out pulling tranny. Have to get back about what he actually did. THANKS

Sounds like it's still in 3rd or 4th (probably 3rd since you have to go through 3rd to get to 2nd) when you shift down to 2nd. Classic "two gears at once" problem like you'd see with an old Farmall M with a worn shifter.
