Vintage Family Farm Photos

Afternoon all! I was going through some photos in my mother's Family History book. Stumbled across these gems! Man, if only we could have passed some of this equipment down through the family - I would be one happy guy! This is from my grandmother on my mother's side (Lind family in MN). It was great to see some old photos like this. I can't tell what brand the steamers are, and there is a photo of a stationary hooked up to a sawmill. Also, looks like the picture of the barn has an IHC Titan in front of it! I hope you all enjoy the pictures!

Amazing photos! Thank you for sharing! They might have not had an awful lot back in those days but they were rich beyond comprehension in the most important way!

I always thought I should have been born about 50 years earlier.. I just have the mentality for harder work, but a simpler life. These days things are so darn hectic.

Anyways.. Anyone think they can identify the machinery in the photos?

I think the first steam engine is an Advance. It's a compound engine. looks like it is being fired with straw, with a spark arester on stack.

that does appear to be a ihc titan ken ,, but that's al I can identify .. love that barn , and wisht mine lookt like that one ,,, even though they are out of date and no longer needed in modern farming ,. was born in 56 .I too wisht I were born 50 yrs earlier ,,.. but i probably would a been caught in the cross hairs of some soldiers gun we were fighting against like dad did when his tank was hit ,,. but he survived that,, before that the depression , and even a little bootleggin and rufnekin, and also a litening STRIKE near miss that jolted him pretty bad,,. and still he lived a full life ,he farmed , raised 8 children to respect law and order , to fear GOD, and work every day and pull their load,. it finally kilt him at the ripe young age of 93 , my mother was no different living to 91, she was a
ROSEY the riveter building airplanes while dad was island hoppin across the s pacific,, as a boy and young man , dad would fit rite in any of those pix cheerfully and work hard all day and be a fine teaM player ,,,and yes he hated the modern world ,all its rules and complications that defied common sense ///funny he coined the phrase modern B/S, years before I heard it anywhere else ,..

would you mind defining the term COMPOUND ENGINE ,..? for us that would like to know , I am thinking that it had power transmitted to the crank from either direction the piston topped out to ,.,. the 2 cylinder engines like my friends avery is a single firing engine ,,, AM I Correct ?

Thank you for taking the time to post the pics. They are very interesting. By the way, what part of Minnesota did they come from?

My mother's side of the family originally was from the Wabasha/Red Wing area. Most of the farm has been sold off, but I am told that some extended family do still own portions of the farm.

Dad's side originated in Barrett, MN where they also farmed (Christopherson side). Been trying to scrounge up pictures of his side as well, but it is proving to be difficult. They grew up quite poor, but worked every day as hard and as long as they could. Had to in order to eat in those days!

I'd have to agree. I am real curious as to what type of tractor might be in the first picture, as well as what type of steamer might have the stack at the rear of the boiler. Looks like I will be looking for a few tractor encyclopedias. There are a couple I have been eyeing on Amazon.
