Feed ratio question

Help me work this out.

I grind all of my cattle and hog feed. I've got that down pat and have used the same ratios for years using the Purina Concentrate 40.

About six months ago I decided to start grinding my own chicken feed. With grain prices it's better than selling, right? So, I got the chicken
base from the Coop (it's 40% protein). I've been mixing it 4to1. Half corn, a quarter wheat, and a quarter milo. The first batch they kind of
picked through and didn't eat too well. The second batch I added an additional 50 pounds of base and they ate it better. Egg quality was better.
For giggles the next batch I put in 100 extra pounds of base. They ate it like candy. They laid like fiends. I dropped back the next batch to the
extra 50 again and have held there. All of the birds are healthy and laying 95% but aren't eating a ton.

Which is better - eating like crazy or eating a lesser amount? The Coop has been no help.

I never raised layers but I raised contract broilers for 15 years so take this advise for what you paid for it. I would think the mid ration would be better. I know if you push broilers too hard, there is a price to pay in the overall bird health,

When eating a lot, did you notice weight gain? A layer that is gaining weight will not have a full productive life. My vote would be for the mid ration that they eat, but not like it's candy.

Protien content is what lays the eggs. corn is like candy to chickens in the winter its great but if they get to fat they stop laying. I use a 20% layer rather than the more common 16% You can also soak your feed in water and vinegar. Increases the palatability and aids in digestion.
