OT, Whats It Worth?

Got my hands on what I am going to call a Gantry Crane. It is JUST the powerhead / winch set up, and is meant to roll on an I Beam, not the suspended I beam on a cart type of setup, JUST the winch. It is a 5 ton, with cable, and a block and tackle / hook set up. It has a 3 phase, 5 h.p motor for the up and down, and a smaller motor that turns the wheels and moves it along the I beam, so the carriage is motorized. I have no idea if it works or not, just trying to sell the thing.

From what I have found, new they are pushing $8000 for some, what do you guys think this thing is worth? It is in very good condition, but I have no idea if it is operational or not. All I know is that where it came from it was just too small, and they replaced it with a 15 ton, and then put this on a pallet and tucked it in the corner. Nothing broke, it was just too small.

Value? Thanks!

I would not think it would have much value maybe a couple of hundred. Someone would need to build the rolling structure and that is the real expense in a setup like this. 5 tons is not really a big crane so there would be a limited market.

In order to sell it as working, you need to find a way to put it under power.

Do you have any connections with a shop that would let you pick it up with a forklift and temporary it to power? Then actually lift something with it to prove it will lift.

Then you could put it on Ebay or Craigs List as a "working hoist" and sell it with good conscience. I doubt you would get near the new price, but maybe $1500-2000 might happen.

Otherwise it won't bring much not knowing if it works.

It is very common to see industrial items like this go very cheap since very few have 3 phase power to use them. I bought a large old metal lathe a few years back in good working condition. Price was based on scrap metal value (by the seller). I have a phase converter to make use of items like this. This works but is not very energy efficient if you plan to put a lot of hours on them.

We scrap stuff like that all the time. Some places will give you double or triple scrap price and they will part them out - usually selling the motor to someone that had theirs die.

Can't help you sell it, but I just used my I-beam in the shop with a big rolling manual chain lift, it is either 1/2 ton or 1 ton, to pick up a H Farmall rear tire with rubber and center and rim and all, to change out the rear grease seal. Wow, what an easy job, can position that wheel just exactly, hold it, roll it back and forth, lower it 1/8" at a time. There is somebody could really use that lift of yours. Maybe not the ordinary farmer. Somebody in town, with a bigger shop? I do know, many times a utility company is able to run 3-phase to a site on request, if they are approached correctly.

3 phase is kind of the kiss of death on that kind of stuff. Its not really an industrial-size crane, so the market would be with the home mechanic/hobbyist- who seldom has 3 phase power.

New is with certification of course, most industrial customers won't touch any crane item without a certified inspection from a dealer etc. And being 3phase and too large for most home shops or farms it's probably the kinda thing you will see on craigslist forever for 500 bucks till the owner scraps it
