4020 engine

I am restoring a 65 4020 Deisel and I want to know if I should rebuild the engine again or just do an r&r and overhaul on it. The engine was supposedly rebuilt under 500 hrs ago but I dont really trust it because the fellow I bought it from bought at an auction used it for awhile and the rebuilt the engine and parked it for around 3 or 4 years give or take.Someone just tell me what they think as to what I shouold do here. I plan to sell it after it is restored So this needs to be a very good tractor... Thanks and yall have a great day! Let me know what you think guys!

The only way you will ever know is to open it up. Check the bearings and crank with plastiguage and pull the head and see what it looks like. It could be a weekend project that costs you only a gasket set and relieves your fears.

Are you going to guarantee the tractor after rebuild? If not, why don't you just put it on a dyno (with someone that knows what they are doing) and then sell the tractor as such.

A tiny strip of plastic mase to a specific size tha5 you put between the bearing and crank and tighten the bearing down. This qill flatten the plastic and you then measure how wide it gets to tell you the bearing clearance. It is available at most auto parts stores

Ditto on Roger's comment. Diagnose what is actually needed before throwing money at it. If you are an inexperienced engine builder, buyers will look at your rebuild with the same skepticism you have now about the previous rebuild.

If you are working on this as a hobby project, just assume you won't get much of your investment back and have fun.

I think you are confusing the terms restored and repainted ?
If truly restored and put up for resale you will not get out of it what you have into it. Sounds more like it should be sold as a repainted unit. If it runs good and makes proper power why open it up ? The other guy ran it without issue it seems ?

I don't intend to offend you or be mean but seriously now if you do not know what plastigage is you really should not make this your first engine rebuild. Maybe your from another area it they call it something else ?

Not an easy place to be in but I would find a port in the engine to tap in with an oil pressure gauge. Second I would send a sample of the oil out for analysis. Third I would check the coolant for contamination. After that and that none of the first three tasks reveal something bad then I would dyno test the tractor.

This is my first rebuild. I want to go through it because when i sell it as a repainted unit I wouod like to also advertise it has a rebuilt engine. Being that i dint rebuild it I want to make sure it was done right and everything is proper.

In my book r&r and overhaul means to go through and check everything perform tests and such like. Rebuild it complete dissasembly and replacing pistons bearings and the likes.

Be careful going into this...

Be real easy to spend more in parts and machine shop than you will ever come close to getting back.

If you're wanting to do a restoration, just for experience and to try your hand at it, get an older gas model. Something cheap, simple, forgiving, and parts available.

I am not doing a full 100 percnt ground up restoration i am painting suppliing all missing or broken parts making sure all works well and is work ready. Any objections? I am splitting the tractor already to replace a pto brake. Thnks

Hello marcusoveroltzer,

If you don't know what a plastic gauge is, you may not be ready for an overhaul. diesel bearing clearances are it the 10 thousands. here is what a plastic gauge looks like. This one is for .001 to .003 with a 1/2 thousand in the gauge.

I would really use it for a year before taking on any work that is not absolutely necessary, that way you will have a better feel for whether or not it has issues.

Once you open it up, your checkbook does too.

Restoration can be in the thousands or tens of.

I wouldn't open the engine up unless you know for sure it needs it. I'm saying this because I rebuilt the engine in my 4430 last winter. I did a complete in-frame on it doing everything (as far as I can tell) 100% correct but it still spun a rod bearing not once but a second time after repairing the first. I ended up with a complete used engine

marcus ,,. unless that motor is acting like someone p-ut sumthin in it backwards ,, I would leave well enuf alone,,.. iam certain you should heed the advice of all the good posters here,,. I admire you for wanting to overhyaul and get indside the motor because YOU WANT TO ,,. BUT PLEASE DON't ,..youy may not be able to handle the overwhelming strain of getting everything perfectly back together and running ,.for those without trained experience in overhauling a engine .it is worse than trying to put chit back in a horse,.. abnd the guy thar gets the job after you give up ande quit will feel exactly thAT WAY ,..500 hours since overhaul ,..with a lousey service recordthese motors could easily run 5000 houtrs ,,, my 4020had over 8000 hours when it was traded and the dealer overhauled the motor for a better sale ,it really did not need to be done , YOU NEED TO KBOW ,these engines will use a guart of oil per day of heavy field work BRAND NEW and EVERY working day THEREAFTER , some owners boast of 15,000, hours on a 4020 , that has had good care and service ,,. the very same thing can be said for any of the other makes that size ,,. no you should not open that motor,../ a fool andhis money are soon departed ..//and I mean that kindly

Thank you for your input!! At this time I now plan to leave well enough alone with the engine it has caused no issues at all in the 4 months I have owned the tractor. Id like to ask yalll if you think 4000 was a fair price for the tractor?

jon ,, this guy, marcus as ambitious and eager as he may be,.. reminds me of a couple of nephews I have that end up getting in way over their head and require adult supervision to get out of the mud hole ,,. and I was no different at that age 40 yrs ago ,lol TRUE , experience and adversity are the best teacher .all.posters .were kind as they could be ,,, but in all honesty with 500 hours on a new motor , that 4020 should not be opened up ,. ,,. if marcus lived nearby me , ibwqould welcome him to hang out every day and together, we could overhaul a 930 case that really needs overhauled ,..

I would give you 4 g sifght unseen ,,youcan go on cland chek the classified on this site ,, treactor house too ,,..you canh find mangled troubled 4020 for far less than 4 g ,,. but the proven motors and drive train thjat look nicer than they did when new will bring well over 10 g,,. ps , excuse my stiky kets keys on thisdamm computo,.. I have a dc case that is 65 yrs old that is flawless and this 5 yr old modern bs machine is trash already ,.

The reason he parked it is that maybe he wasn't patient enough to wait for it to get broke in. It might have been slobbering and he decided it wasn't right. Which it probably is. When I completely rebuilt the engine on my '65 4020 PS it took over 500 hours until I was happy. Now with about 800 on it, it runs very smooth.

Your "book" is wrong. Overhaul means exactly that - tear it apart, replace what needs replacing, repair what needs repairing, and recondition what needs reconditioning. Rebuilding is THE EXACT SAME THING. PERIOD.

Jimg, what does the word period at the end of your post mean? Does it mean that Jimg. Allentown has replaced Mirriam-Webster? as the authority on the definition of all words.

If it does not use oil, has good compression and minimal blow by I would rum it. Might also cut open the oil filter to look for excessive wear metals. It is normal to see some.
