U-joimts....dinosaur mechanicals...

All,

Am I the few of the remaining dinosaurs that replaces a u-joint, and "relaxes" the ears?

I mean when a u-joint is replaced, post-press/beating, do you hang the shaft from your hand and beat the bottom of the ears to get the joint to relax?

Sounds crude, but beating on the lower part of the wye tends to compensate for the ears being crushed inwards from vise activity that's necessary to get the old joint out...

I've never heard of doing that, but will give it a try next time I have one that seems a little tight. Thanks for the tip.

You're not alone.

I was taught that little trick when i worked at a machine shop. We were actually a industrial and automotive crankshaft shop.. When your hitting the steel with the hammer it actually is vibrating and moving the steel molecules around . That is also how you can bend steel or cast iron with a little pressure and a hammer.

I had to think about this, I do it different, I counter press or support and beat the second cap back after the circlip is in to seat it tight and take the pressure off the end of the cross and relax the ears. I do tap the ears while pressing if they grab so I don't bend them, usually changing without a press using the smash it method they don't seem to grab the ears as bad.

Only correct way to do it for sure, if you don't it may well likely fail far sooner than it should,,, I have had plenty of blank stares when I tell someone that
cnt

Not sure what I do ? I have not done a lot of them but have done several different styles. Seems like I end up doing a lot of beating, pressing and cussing ! before, during and after.

I am having trouble picturing what you do...

Any video links or pics/description...

I feel like we always fight the darn things...hate to have an easier way exist...

Precisely how I always wind up doing it.
