4020 problem

Hi guys I have a problem with my 1965 JD 4020 Deisel. I will describe this issue to the best of my ability and hope someone can please help!!! It is a powershift. This issue does not happen every time I start the tractor. So when i go to put it in gear the lever seems quit hard to push up into forward and reverse gears when im going from neutral to start my shifting. When i get it into first gear and release the clutch the tractor does not move BUT! It bogs down like it is trying to move and if I dont engage the clutch the engine will die.I dont know what it could possibly be so if someone could please help that would be awesome. Thanks everyone...

The tractor is not coming out of park all the way . There is a cable from the shift lever that goes down under the platform on the right side .It could have slid in its clamp either under the dash or on the bottom end. It would be behind the right hand Battery.

If I'm right and the tractor is not coming out of park He best use the inching pedal and not just put in gear or it will break the park pawl.

power shift tractors are made to shift on the go, never use what you a calling a clutch other than to start the tractor. I had one and never used it to even hook up to my tools. Used the shift lever only. Need to change filters every yr even if you don't use it and only buy john deere highgaurd for it as well.

The inching pedal is what you are calling a clutch. There is no normally called clutch in a powershift tractor. The inching pedal controls oil so the powershift transmission can "slip" a little, i.e. inching.

The inching pedal is where the clutch pedal on standard shift tractors would be . They are made just for that starting out a load smooth and hooking up equipment. Don't be afraid to use it . It disengages wet clutch packs in the transmission . They are a very trouble free transmission . We have a 3020 with 17000 hours on and it was a main loader tractor for most of those hours. The transmission has never been apart . We always use the inching pedal for loading silage or manure or you would be breaking a lot of things. But you do not need to use it to shift every gear.

I have driven a few powershifts that will do what you are talking about. I am not a powershift person(very little experience, but have owned several)) but I felt like the linkage just needed lubed up good and maybe readjusted. The one 3020 that did it the most it seemed like if you shifted it side to side rather hard it would not do it which made me think worn linkage or the cables needed lubed.Tom

seems to me the spring that holds the park pawl is broke and not holding it out of the gear, takes a few minutes to get in there but easy to replace. I have had a few issues with the powershift through the years but as with most things, it was a preventative maintenance problem.

yes lube the linkages ,,. only adjust when warm ,,. . I have a p-shift 4020 since 1990 ,,. like others said ,,. change filters every yr , don't leave it in the rain , the brake pedal seals will allow water in the tranny ,then the filters will be limited , because water wont flow well , that nudge , in extreme cases could be the park adjustment catch and any motion gear arguing for priority , not a good thing at all ,if you choose to adjust ,, do0that after she has been running at least one hour ,..shut off engine while toying with this ,..sure don't want ya to git runned over ,.. fyi ,, my 4020 when very cold will nudge forward even though it is in reverse when I 1st start to move,..and it don't like 6-8 til it has run a few minutes ,.. it amazes me, going up the steep hill , how much that cold tranny oil pulls it down to 5th gear , it could pull the hill decent enuf, but I feel the oils are working hard and no need in forcing the issue til everything is feeling it is ready to take long strides with ease ,.. once warmed up , she will roar up the hill in 8th gear

As other has stated the “park pawl” is not releasing. The cable that pulls in in and out may need to be adjusted or freed up as it may have got moisture and debris inside of it. Check each end of the part cable and make sure that the seals / wipers are on it. If not, replace the cable as it will cause nothing but problems. Also, the spring that pulls the park paw in and out may be weak and need to be replaced.

If the park pawl does hang up, put it in reverse and slowly let the inching peddle out. A lot of time this will release it. Be careful as the last thing that you want to do is break the pawl. If you break it, you’re going to have to do a double split to fix it.

DO NOT be afraid to use the inching peddle as it was designed to be used just like a clutch. I rebuilt my 1965 John Deere 4020 powershift transmission last fall. The tractor has had a JD158 loader on it for the past 30 years and the transmission has been bullet proof and never been touched until last fall. We have owed this tractor since 1970.

After 50 years of use and 30 years of loader abuse the powershift was slipping. It was slipping because the drive plates and separator plates were just worn out from old age much like your knees…
I had $5500.00 into it and did the work myself. This included replacing numerous other seals and parts that were not associated with the powershift. I did this as the tractor was open and there was not better time to replace them than now. If I would have taken this to the dealer I would have had $10,000.00 into it. Even at $10,000.00 it cheaper than buying a used JD4020 that you have no history, I know what I have and it was worth the $5500.00 to repair it. Rebuild a synchro transmission and your eyes will bulge.

(quoted from post at 17:46:54 10/19/16) My linkage is very sloppy up and down anybody got a remedy?? Thanks for all the help guys.

Up and Down??? Are you refering to the speed and directional selection valves? (the rods that connect the shifter to the control valve housing)

Replace the worn parts as needed.
