Removing a big tree in the City.

I was on my way to work in south Minneapolis
this morning. Got to the street I needed to
turn on and it was blocked off so I had to
go around. I could see the big hydraulic
crane parked in the street so I got out of
the pickup and walked up the alley to see
what they were doing.
Big silver Maple. Must have been 5' plus at
the stump was being taken down.
They were reaching over the top of the house
and taking it out a piece at a time. Not
much room between all the power lines,
houses and garages there so this was the
only way to take it out. Must have been a
hundred feet of stick on the crane. I didn't
stay long. Just had a look and snapped a
photo then was on my way.
I wonder what it cost.
Bet you it wasn't cheap.
Hard to see behind the brush but there is a
guy in the bucket of the boom truck.
Gives you some sense of scale on the size of
the tree.

i had 2 big maples taken out last year at my house. same situation, they came in with a crane with a 120 ft stick, chunked the trees out and lifted them over the house. cost was around 2400. did it in one day, done by 4 pm. all cleaned up too.

I'm on the church board and we had two silver maples that needed to come down. Local tree service charged $3000 to remove and stump grind. Took them down from the top as they were close to the church. 56" across and 30" was rotten....glad we got them down before they blew on the building. Course there was some screaming from members till they saw the center was bad. E SD.

Nearly two years ago I had a maple in front of the house taken down. It was close to five foot at the base. I had a quote for $1,000 from the guy. I expected a crane but he showed up with just a bucket truck, two helpers and some saws. Some big branches were over the house, some were over the road, and some were over the power lines that run down the side of the road. I know that the guy is good so I wasn't worried. Pretty soon it was raining limbs. As soon as he got one third done his helpers started cutting up the limbs on the ground. Then the same on the other two thirds. The ones over the house, road, and wires, he notched first so that they went sideways. I carried the small stuff to my burn pile, my friend picked up the pieces suitable for firewood, He was done in an hour and ten minutes.

Seen them doing that on this old house. Price seems high but what would it cost to fix a roof if that tree went over ? Working in a cheese factory they had to redo a floor in the center (brand new floor but didn't put drains in) they opened the roof and took the chunks out that way.

Next door and up the block had silver maples in their yards. Those damn things are a WEED! Grow like crazy but one little ding or wound left untreated and you are toast. I had one start to grow in my yard. In four years it was almost 8 inches across and more than 20 feet. I cut it down before anything else could get out of control!

We are looking at the same thing at the cemetery, huge tree and 90 year old stones underneath. We expect $1000.00

At one of my rental houses I had limbs rubbing neighbors house from 3 trees and some rubbing my house from another tree. Had trimmer come in and cut everything back to shape. Three guys and bucket truck and chipper worked all day. $1800. I told them be very aggressive and clean up brush and saplings on 50' of prop. line. I was surprised how large of stuff they threw into chipper. Some was 12" dia.

In 2001 Dad had a tree taken down that spanned almost a half block. The tree man came with an old REC power company boom truck that went up pretty darned far but he could only get 3/4 of the way up in the tree with the boom fully extended. In fact he looked kind of small compared to the tree when he was way up there. To control the drop of limbs that were over buildings he would throw a rope over the limb and tie the rope to another limb on the tree. He knew what he was doing because when the tied limb was cut it would drop till it hit the rope, then swing away from the building. We stayed far away because the guy was a little crazy with that boom but he knew what he was doing.

The electric company put a card in the door saying they were going to trim some trees in yard. They had white spots painted on them. I called them and told them I wanted three cut clear down. Got home today and they are all trimmed.
