First day with hearing aids

Got new hearing aids this morning. Yikes! I can hear walking now! Had a real hard time walking at first because I was looking for the noise til I figured out it was me, I can hear my arms brushing on my shirt and pants legs russleing. Lol. Had to tell my wife not to yell at me. That went over well. The elevator sounded ok going up, but squeeked going down. Was really frustrated with the backround noise in my truck and almost took them out til I figured out it was the fan set on high. Radio uwed to be on volume 30, now its set at 21. Going to be interesting getting used to them. Kids should like not listening to the tv on max from now on.

You will also want to turn them down a little . With them down let youre ears adjust to just a little amplification. Then turn it up a little at a time. Will be much more gentle on your ears.

I need to do that one of these days. I had mine checked last spring and they told me I was right on the edge of needing them or not. I know I do, but haven't talked myself into pulling the trigger on it yet.

Good luck. Went through the exact same thing. Even shoe laces make noise when walking. Worst part was starting some old tractors and hearing bearing noise that I did not hear before. Had to rebuild a governor in a old A. Couldn't stand the noise with my aids in.

Aren't they fun, I just got mine 3 weeks ago best thing I ever did. I've drove the same pickup for 23 yr's never knew it had a seat belt buzzer, went from 100% on TV volume to 28%, I even hear my zipper. Only problem with them is wife still yells at me. I feel naked without them. Couple days I was used to them. Enjoy !!

My mom just got a set a few months ago.

She hates them refuses to wear them, everything is too loud!

She has no control over the volume, has to go back where she bought them to have them adjusted. The tech won't set them where she wants them, but where his "computer" says they need to be...

That was $6000 wasted, done behind my back, bait and switch, abuse of the elderly!

Rant over, sorry!

My wife has hearing aids, I don't. (Just had my hearing checked a couple of months ago for the first time in 14 years. Still basically normal).

What I run into with my wife, is her aids cause her to speak more softly than she normally did. Then she yells at me and swears I have a problem if I ask her to repeat herself. (See above). A friend of mine whose wife wears hearing aids tells me he has the same problem.

WOW! thats a lot! Mine were $3600 amd suposed to be the best you can get. Mine can be manuallymwet but they have it disabled, they said to try it on auto first, if I don't like 9t they will turn on the manual control.

Take them back and insist on aids with wearer adjustable volume. There are many situations that call for more or less amplification, and some where you wont them all the way down.

When you go to church you will hear the pews creeking and papers rustling for the first time in years. For me it's still debatable whether hearing aids help or hinder in a crowded room full of conversation. One bit of advice is to remember to take them out before you shower. I forget way too often and had to have one repaired because of it. I don't realize it till I shampoo, by then it's too late. Cleaning the little microphones is important too. If they are worn behind the ear and one of the aides starts coming in and out amplification wise the tiny little mics probably need to be cleaned. The dealer has shown you how to clean them. Summer seems to be worse, because of the combination of sweat and dirt. Putting them back in right after a shower is a good way to shove a little ear wax into an ear bud. Once you are used to owning and wearing them you won't be without them.

Just got my hearing aids tuned up at the VA a couple of weeks ago. These are so much better than the ones I had before the VA benefits kicked in. Definitely have to have volume control or many things are way too loud, but maybe that's because I never heard them well. First time peeing sounded like Niagara Falls, you get used to it.

I never knew how much noise the news paper made while turning pages until I got hearing aids. Good luck Jon, you'll get used to them in a flash.

I have hearing aids but my doctor told me to mute them or not wear them when messing with the old tractor so most of the time I do not wear them. Maybe in a few years I'll need them more then I do now but time will only tell.

Been debating on wearing them when deer hunting but afraid if I do the gun going off will cause me problems

You couldn't hear? Dang,we could have been talking about you this whole time and you wouldn't have known. Another wasted opportunity. LOL

Yep, you won't be getting away with that now! I was sitting outside the clinic listening to a woman across the street talking to her daughter. Before I would have been able to see them talking but not heard anything. Today I picked up every word.

I've had mine five years now.
I hate them, but can't do without them.
Mine had to have a extra piece grafted onto the ear bud,
so they wouldn't fall out when standing on my head doing something.'
Another piece of maintenance on mine is a little filter called a
"stot" that fits in the ear bud next to the sound channel.
I get about six days out of a set of batteries. Tried some cheap
batteries off eBay, that didn't work out.

On mine they have what is called a tv-link with a Com-pilot II (all phonak brand) it plugs in to the audio out of the tv and gets it to your hearing aids. I can watch tv with the volume low enough that the wife and kids cant hear the show. also the compilot connects to my phone so I can use phone hands free or listen to radio or books playing thru the phone. get funny looks when someone calls me and I talk to them, every one thinks I am talking to myself...

Friend of ours got hearing aids about a year ago. Was funny, he didn't tell us, we went over to his place as usual for the group to watch some football and chat.

I felt something was up, because he was talking so quietly we had to ask him what he was saying all the time. He was so very soft spoken, was t normal for him.....

As soon as I heard something about hearing aid, I knew what the deal was.

pdruff, Those are the ones I have with the com-pilot. There is also an accessory microphone that The Wife can wear on her collar that syncs with my hearing aids. Really helps out on road trips. Next thing is new glasses, she refuses to read street signs for me any more.

They probably have a maximum threshold where they will mute for extreme loud noises. Chevk with your vendor.

I have a set of gun mufflers which have built in microphones and amplifliers. Will mute on gunshots. Problem is wind noise. Which can be distracting at best

If they do I was not told about it but then on the other hand I did get them from the V.A. and many things with the V.A. they are not open to telling the Vet the whole story as to how to and not do things. I was told not to wear them when messing with engines etc Period

I've had "tanker ears" and hearing aids for years now. They do help especially with the tiny voices of small grand children.

There is a story about an old guy who's doc referred for a hearing test. Next time he was at the doctors office the doc noticed his hearing aids and said "I bet your family likes you being able to participate in conversations now". Old guy looks at the doc and says "they don't know, I just sit back and listen. Changed my will 4 times last month!".

Good luck with them. When I got my first set it took numerous visits to get them adjusted. After four years my hearing deteriorated to where they could not amplify enough. Got another set two years ago, $3000 each, former employer paid for them. Much better but I still do a lot of lip-reading and I can hear but not make out words if the speaker doesn't talk directly to me. Wife will not meet me half-way, she insists on saying something in another room or starts talking and turns away. I heard Rush Limbaugh a few years ago say that hearing loss is the only disability that people get angry at you for having. Also have a Surf-Link that connects to the TV and I hear it directly through the hearing aids. It's great.

I agree with people who say to get hearing aids you can control the sound on. Most techs think we want to hear like a teenager, but we just want to hear better than we do. The way I tell them is "Nothing goes in my head that I can't control". I've had them for 20 years and I'm to the point now that conversation is pointless without it. (I only have one but need two, don't have the money)I still want to be able to turn it off or down when things get noisy. Clapping is torture, it shuts off and on between claps and drive me batty. If you can't control it I think you will hate it.

Jon,
Now you will be able to hear what all those truckstop cuties are saying about you. HeHe.
Did your favorite Barbacue stop live up to your expetations today???
Loren

Yes it did, had ham and ribs. Excellent! I'm a little afraid of what those cuties might be saying.

When I got mine I was leaving the parking lot & flipped on my turn signal. I heard the turn signal blinking. It had probably been 30 plus years since I had heard them blink. The next thing I noticed was when I walked in my house I flipped on the light switch. It had probably also been 30 plus years since I had heard a light switch make noise when you turn them on. I wear mine all the time & love them.

I have been told for the last 5 years that I need them, now that I have successful cancer treatment it looks like I may live forever maybe I should get some! Any recommendations? I Worked in a noisy environment for 40 years, and for the first 15 they didn't stress the importance of hearing protection.

got mine from the VA abpout 1 month ago. They have been trying to get me to wear them for 10 years. Didn't think I needed them> noiw the ringing in my ears is very LOUD.

T hat's the tip off they are not the auto shut down models. I wear mine deer hunting and just remember to take that one second and turn them off. One button, one press.i got real tired of my buddies asking why I didn't shoot the deer that walked by me at 50 feet I never heard.
You can also buy the muffs with HA in them that auto shut off. I have an extra pair PM your Snail mail and I'll send them to you. Good Cabela's brand.

My mom was the worst about that. Whenever she had something to say she jumped up & went 3 rooms away to say it.

Hey guys, got this new hearing aid, is great, the most expensive one a man can get.
