OT pesky groundhog

Normally when I get a groundhog some where I just shoot and shovel, but this guy made his hole right smack dab under my propane tank. Not a good place for target practice. I have a live trap- what's a good bait for the darn thing.

I've heard all kinds of recommendations for bait. I even had a groundhog go into my live trap with no bait at all. Lettuce, cabbage, cat food, and the list goes on. Mike

Throw a big handful or two of double bubble gum in the hole & you will find the papers there the next day but you won't see the groundhog again.

Can you get a car or truck close to the hole?? If you can do so then simply put a hose on the exhaust and push it down as far as you can into the hole and let it idle running for say 30 minutes or so. Then pull away and cover the hole.

I dont even use bait. Place the trap on one side of the hole, then lay a 4x4 on the other 3 sides. They will walk in the trap before they step over the 4x4

What i found is you take a 5 gallon bucket pour in a couple gallons of laundry soap (the cheaper more perfume the better) about a gallon of bleach (a little more kick) finish filling with water then dump that down the hole do that two days in a row and they won't use that hole again

Have had good luck with apples and cantaloupe. The last one I had under my propane tank I just put down the trap, put some 4x4's around it to discourage him getting out any other way (and, unlike their normal procedure, he only had one hole--if more than one you'll have to cover the others first), put a couple apple slices in the trap and got him within half an hour.

I guess it's a good thing my dog likes laying next to the propane tank !
She's getting old now and when she's gone I'm betting I'll be over run with critters.

Melon squares. Throw on the ground and set live trap right on top of them. Did that the other day, came back to find a very sheepish 'chuck. Somehow went MIA shortly after.

One went under my pole barn last month. Bored under the slab in the sand and mustve moved out a pickup load of sand going in one side and out the other corner. I will never be able to get the sand back in. I poured ammonia in the hole and covered it. He moved under a small shed on skids nearby. Put a connibear 220 across the hole. Got him by the snout and shot him. I've never had luck with bait.

(quoted from post at 12:14:32 10/10/16) Conibear, 220 will do the trick, no bait required.

Yes! They're not legal above water in MD, but I still use them anyways. Killed one just this morning under my mud room.

If he is down there this will work for sure. When we were kids growing up on a hog farm we had rats get under the concrete. The ammonia worked every time. We had more fun doing this than anything.
