Fordson Dexta

Hello, I have a question regarding a engine rebuild. Fordson dexta (3 cyl dsl), ran low on oil, developed a knock. I think it's the bearings, could be a bent rod not sure until it's torn down. The mechanic it tearing it down to determine what the problem is. I figure might as well do a complete motor rebuild. get the head checked out and put all back together. Any idea what $$$ should run for a rebuild??? Motor kit around $400 for everything, machine shop check the head (not sure maybe another $400). How much for labor?? Thanks

The cost depends on what you want. If yours has not already been converted to the perkins A3.152 flanged sleeves you will have to have it bored (about 16-18 thousandths???) and counter bored for the flanged liner. Costs could run over $250 to have the block bored. I am not sure of this. I am getting ready to pull three engines and have this done. You get a little more horsepower and increased compression with the 152 cubic inch kit. Head depends on if the valves have worn below the cylinder head face and if it needs to be cut for valve seats. If you can use the old liners you could save considerably.

The big cost is the crankshaft if it has had a journal scored. It costs over $250 to have one ground here so I just bought a new one instead. Kits with flanged sleeves, rings, pistons, and gaskets with full kit run about $300-500 depending on what you want. I think someone may still make press in liners, but with the flanged ones you don't have to worry about a liner falling down in the block.
If you don't already have a spin on oil filter adapter get one. Less chance of some Bubba reassembling the cartridge and components wrong. You might also need a new oil pump. Parts could run a total of about $600-700 and more if there is serious head work to be done. The labor is whatever they charge in your part of the country per hour or job and how much you can do yourself.

I am also considering changing to a Minimec injection pump, but that is whole nutter ball of wax.

I forgot to add. They are making new cylinder heads, stripped or complete. The Dexta uses the same cylinder head as the massey 3.152 with indirect injection.
