Ozone alert today in Terre Haute

If my sinuses aren't bad enough this time of the year, the local news is calling for an Ozone alert today. They recommend people with repertory issues stay inside. News claims the high pressure is pushing the tropospheric ozone layer closer to the surface and the lack of wind and adds to the problem.

Can't recall having an ozone alert, have you?

Wasn't everyone running about and waving their arms over the hole in the ozone layer a few years back? So now we have so much that its coming down and bothering us?

There's atmospheric Ozone, and there's ground level Ozone. One is good, one is bad... Kinda water in your drinking glass & water in your gas tank. Poor analogy, but you get the point

Also, it's not "coming down". It is being created as a second hand pollutant by engines & methane (cow burps). The pollutants react with sunlight to create ozone. That pungent smell after a close lightning strike? Ozone. Ozone, isn't very stable, and only lasts for a few weeks, but can be a constant problem in areas where there's a lot of industrial activity, or cows.

Ozone alerts are common in Boise during the winter due to thermal inversions that occur here and hang on for days. The ozone created near the surface becomes problematic when there is no wind and the inversion conditions do not allow the atmosphere to turn over. There are times when you can see, smell and taste the air.

Phoenix has the same problems in winter as Boise; being in a valley makes it harder to get the winds to move the pollutants away from the city.

Ozone is not made from methane, ozone is a naturally occurring gas that is made when ultraviolet radiation in the atmosphere breaks O2 down into 2O then combines it with another oxygen molecule to make ozone (O3). No pollutants envolved. Not to say pollutants can't make the situation worse, just it is not ozone.
