Just trying to buy something.

I went to tractor supply to buy a bottel of penicillin,I had to print my name and address on a form? Guy ahead of me bought 2 bernzomatic propane bottles, the blue ones, cashier asked him his date of birth, guy said January 1944, he says what you can't sell it to us older guys, cashier said we can't sell it to anyone under 18? They also ask your zip code, phone number ect,, do you want a charge card from us? You go to a gas station and the pump asks 4 questions before it will turn on! What ever happened to paying for something with out the hassle? Does this frustrate anyone else? It takes 10 minutes to check out with all the nonsense they ask you, this is what i have scan it tell me the price I pay and go.

Yes, aggravating and a waste of everyone in lines time, that is one reason I buy more and more supplies on line. I wonder what marketing guru told these companies that this type of peckerwooding is good business.

Yes, it is frustrating! Especially at the self check out counter when it locks down waiting for a cashier to come check my ID to buy spray paint!

And then there are the places that want to see ID to use a credit card! Visa and Mastercard policy strictly prohibit it, so do some state laws, but still it goes on!

Ask for my phone number, I just tell them "no". I've never been refused a sale because of it, and if I ever am, so be it. I will not put my phone number out for sale to the robo spamers!

Between that kind of crap, and the new chip that forces you to leave the card in the machine until it gets done with it's gone beyond ridiculous.

To make things worse, the chip can be 'hacked' so much easier than the strip ever could.

In the end, they do the same thing I read about engineers doing now days. They essentially make things more complicated for the average consumer, in what they claim to be an attempt to simplify things and make them easier. I hate to tell them, but it's not working.

I never "press one for English" on the phone or at any self-checkout systems. If the system doesn't start, in English, by itself, I hang up/walk out. Lowe's used to be real bad about that. You couldn't check out without selecting a language. They've changed that now, but I've left carts full of stuff at their check out stand before they fixed the system.

I give my zip code as 90210 and the time and temperature phone number as mine. Or else tell them to just take my money or not and I'll be on my way.

Some of the managers of the Lowes stores around here removed all of the self check registers. Now there is always someone at the register to help you if you need something. We don't self check at any stores. but we will leave the merchandise if there is no one to check us out. One of the local supermarkets has no checkers until 7:00 a.m. - we don't go there anymore.

Well, penicillin IS a controlled substance of some sort and propane IS used in the making of illicit drugs. Having to show ID before using plastic makes all the sense in the world to me since so many are stolen. IOW- if you think it's a pain now, wait until someone steals your identity and cleans out your bank account, max's out your charge accounts or maybe buys a car in your name, all because someone didn't check things out. Do liek some do and put your full name, address, DOB, SSN and phone number on your checks. Guaranteed way to lose everything you own!

Just remember the employee most likely does not like asking. Imagine how they feel with the griping they have to put up with. ITS THE CORPORATE POLICY MAKERS TO BE AGGREVATED WITH!!! They'd sell there own mothers for an extra 1$!

I was just thinking of those cards the other day. Just think of how much longer it takes to get through the line waiting on the card machine. The new machines here at work take about twice as long to do a transaction.

I was just at tractor supply yesterday, bought some PVC cement, cashier mumbled something about" darn birthday thing" but did not ask me for mine, and rung it up. I asked how did she know I was over 18, (i am 66), she said i just put in my birthday when I know they are over 18.....go figure

If you're okay with kids huffing propane/paint or shooting themselves up with veterinary grade penicillin to "cure" themselves of some STD they think they got...

You know you're old enough, and the cashier knows you're old enough, but the computer doesn't and neither do the people at corporate HQ who audit the records before turning them over to law enforcement. THAT is why you need to show and ID and they need to get your birth date off of it.

Use to be when you clearly looked old enough the cashier would punch in a random birthday like 11/11/11 into the computer. Nothing stopping them from doing that for one of their underage buddies, though. So now if you want to keep your job, and not face criminal charges, you get real birth dates off of IDs. The computer raises a red flag if you use the same birth date more than once.

Yes things are getting more complicated, but they have to because people are getting more sophisticated at "beating the system."

Bret,
I no longer use them, but I have old checks with my name, address, SSN and phone number on them. That was how it was done many years ago.

Actually we've had the chips maybe 10 years in canada, it's practically eliminated debit card fraud. Most of the skimmers use the mag strip and you'd get that darned call that your card was being used in Vegas, and has gone into overdraft.

Several years ago I stopped at a convenience store to buy diesel for my Dodge truck.

Told cashier that I was going to fill the truck at pump number 1.

She said that I had to leave some form of identification before pumping fuel.

Gave here a $50 dollar bill and told her that I was Ulysses S. Grant.

Not OK with kids huffing propane or paint, but I think the answer to that goes well beyond getting everyones birthday.

None of the Lowes had self checkout that I ever heard of and with my wife working for them for 15 years if they had that around I am sure She would have mentioned it to me. Worst day of my life was when I had to go in and tell them She had died that morning. And I will not use self checkout anyplace at any time. I do use the card reader at pump and hate it when they ask for zip before letting me pump, regular place does not do that yet.

(quoted from post at 09:00:02 09/20/16) I think you just have to accept it. It makes our money and lives safer. And some of it is for marketing research.

Anyone who gives up liberty in exchange for safety deserves neither.

Much of the hassle is the result of government run wild. They track things like penicillin and propane and cold medicine. Screw them.

Try to buy a can of spray paint here in California. It's locked up, and you have to find a clerk to open the cabinet, then prove you are over 18. Stan

When the gal at Lowe's asks for my phone number, I tell her that I'm happily married, and not to worry, she'll eventually find somebody her own age. Say it in a sad, condescending way and they don't usually ask again.

I agree with you 100%. But I can tell you that 99% of the Sudafed sold today has nothing what-so-ever to do with having a cold. It's used in the manufacture of Meth. Never thought Sudafed was worth a hoot for colds anyway. My gut reaction to the propane sniffers and pint chuffers is: If you are that stupid, here, have another case on me and get it over with. However it does seem that about everybody IS that stupid these days. however, since when is it the government's job to protect people from their own stupidity???

Lots of heroin and opiate overdoses being reported here. On the one hand the cost in treasure and lives is sad and unfortunate. On the other, no one is holding a gun to their head forcing them to take it (other than the pains of addiction in their own brain). In some ways I think of it as a murder- suicide, they inflict damage on loved ones and society and then take themselves out, doing us a favor in the long run. Addictions have always been with us, but in these poor economic and social times it seems to be more wide spread as people seek some solace from despair.

I think it is because we have military in Afghanistan. First heroin epidemic was during Viet Nam when we had military in a heroin country. There are books written about this.

Jay went with a fellow one time to buy tires: same thing 400 questions he got so ticked we left and went to a private tire shop!!!

If you think filling out a form is a burden, you'll likely be dealing with much more baloney soon.

In the USA, after the first of the year, a prescription from a veterinarian will be needed to obtain and use feed-grade and water-soluble antibiotics which any form of that drug can also be used for humans. Paperwork galore and we will likely be contributing to our vet's new yacht.

A scarce few feed-grade antibiotics, such as Carbadox, will not fall under these regulations. The fed's are trying to eliminate these drugs by other means.

I haven't been following new regulations on injectables. There's likely some regulatory activity taking place there, too.

Could the penicillin sigh up be because of the tighter animal drug laws? We can probably thank the druggies for the propane/butane bottle sign up.

The four different questions at the gas station does rile me up too. All I want to do is get gas and go. Period!

Yep. The only thing is they haven't asked me to prove my age for about 45 years. :/ However, I always have to show my ID AT Rite Aid when I buy my wine. They have to input the date of birth off the license. I'm OK with that.

But you know better than to do it now!

Oldest son is in Pharmacy school, working in large chain store pharmacy as a tech. About once a week they have someone come in for Sudafed who shows up on the computer as having bought too large a volume recently, and they deny purchase.

More often, the customer comes in to buy and cannot describe the symptoms that require the use of said Sudafed. "Just give me the stuff.." reply is most common, and results in no sale.

Like mentioned earlier, heroin seems to be the tool of Darwin around here.
