I saw something today

I saw something today that got me thinking. I saw a guy driving down the street use his arm out the window to indicate that he was going to turn right. That got me thinking. Do they even teach this in todays Drivers Ed. Any body have kids taking Drivers Ed that they could ask if they teach these signals to them. You used to see this years & years ago but I haven't seen it used for a long time. Just curious.

When I first had the '47 chevy PU it had no turn signals. I seemed to me that no one had a clue what the hand signals meant. I installed them in self defense. However sometimes it seems I am the only one in Maryland who still uses them at all. [Little rant]

I taught Driver's Ed in the nineties and taught the hand turn signals. I use the hand turn signals daily on the tractors and many drivers have no clue .

Just started Drivers ed today. Haven't been through the book yet but will let ya know if they do. In Snowmobiler's safety class they taught them.

Instructor asked the class what V8 means. NOBODY except me knew!!! Most the kids didn't know what over drive was, what a manual transmission is, etc. Seriously? This is coming from a kid that owns a Dodge ram and has pretty much rebuilt the front end on it, lol. Life in the country is good.

I live on a fairly busy road. I use a hand signal on my Honda Goldwing when I'm making a left turn into my drive. It has two rear blinkers on each side and is fairly good size going down the road. I still have people trying to pass me when I slow down to turn in.

I also point with my finger when singling a turn . As someone else said I think they are just wondering what I'm pointing at. I just close my eyes when my wife does the same thing on her little 750 Honda.

Gerald ,
I use them when i'm on my tractor ... put if I have to cross traffic , I make sure the guy isn't going to try and past ...

HERES something I realize lately .... kids can't read a clock ... unless it's digital ... don't believe me ask a kid to read one ...

............... mark

I used hand signals when driving my 1956 M38a1 army Jeep at first. Finally put turn signals on it, no one could figure out if I was waving to them or flippin' 'em the bird.

As mentioned, I'm afraid someone will see that as a "come around" gesture. I won't use anything but the signals in the tractor as I don't want to be held responsible if someone confuses my gestures and hits me or someone else. I usually ease to the center of the blacktop to take up both lanes when turning left. I do have to take the old Farmall and grinder a mile down the blacktop once a week but all of those turns are rights. It has a fresh new SMV sign on the back of the mixer.

I'm the guy you see baling with half a field done and the flashers on because I forget they are on. On the Deeres the indicators on the dash flash but on the 886 they only indicate when the turn signals are on. I turn on the road flashers every time I go on the road. I'm constantly getting text messages from the neighbors - "Your winkie is on". Lol.

My bet is they do not teach hand signals. Back when we took drivers ed, for me it was 1966, some folks still drove cars with no turn signals but today those cars are long gone as daily drivers.

Most of the drivers education is done by parents/grand parents here in rural Texas. There is some literature and I believe it had the hand signals in it. I taught my son about 4 years ago. Was much cheaper than a driver education class done by the school district. My son who is almost 20 has quite a bit of common sense and has been driving some kinda motorized vehicle (lawnmower, truck, tractor, 4 wheeler) for quite a few years

Yep, I'm the same way. I finally got tired of nearly getting run over every time I got on the road. I've gotten to where I just hog the road, on a tractor, all the way to town if I have to. I will pull off and let people by if I can. If not, tough cookies. Its a mile from the house to our little 1 horse town, and I often take the tractors down to get fuel, or run on through town to get something else. I promise if you pull a 10' disk down a 12' road, they will get over. I just smile and wave, and cruise on by.

I took drivers ed in '71, don't remember ever doing hand signals when we were driving. They were in the book and probably on the test.

Today I doubt if they are mentioned. No one would even know what it meant. Beside, that would be a good way to drop your phone out the window!

I've been hit twice on a tractor turning left into a driveway. Luckily no real damage. Young kids both times. I asked on if he saw my signal. He thought I was waving him around. Then said "What about my car, it's kinda messed up?" like it was my fault.

When I turn left into my lane to my fields,I just start driving over the yellow line for about a 100' or so before I signal with my arm,and I still turn around and look at what ever is behind me.Mark

The hand signals are still in the AARP driver's handbook. I saw a couple different people using hand signals in the last 3 months.

Hand signals? Does anyone today even know there's a device that causes the tail lights to blink on one side or the other to show which way you intend to turn?

Took Drivers Ed in '96, was not taught it. Luckily I learned from my grandfather well before that. Taught it to my eight year old when he is riding his bicycle. he can also read an analog clock. but, he didn't know Amazon.com was a book store.

I just asked my 17YO daughter about hand signals, she knew of their existence. So, discussed at Driver's Ed, not taught.

From what drivers I see around Ohio turn signals must not of came on any of the new cars ? LOL.

The problem with drivers Ed today is they're teaching kids to be motorists instead of drivers. Unfortunatly to many people don't know the
difference.

I am waiting for one of the auto makers to come out with a loud voice on radio saying you left your turn signal on dumb sheet, I need it.

As I understand it here in Ohio the schools no longer teach drivers ed, you are supposed to go to a private school. Was no such thing as drivers ed when I got my licence and I have been out of school for 58 years now. Got learnes on 16th birthday in sept and following spring go the licence. Droped my CDL 11 years ago.

Wichita schools have not taught driver ed for 7 or 8 years now. There are a couple of private driving schools but they are expensive, and since the insurance discount for taking the class doesn't amount to much most kids don't get any kind of formal driving instruction.

Hand Signals ? ? ?

Electric Turn Signals ? ? ?

Naw, you pull the handles on either the Left or Right cords that hang down from the roof, and a 2 foot long PAINTED WOODEN ARROW with reflector stripes on both sides of it, pops out of either the left or right side of the vehicle. Same as on the old School Busses.

:>)

Your local DMV probably has your state's "Driver's Manual" in both print form and online. I know, no one ever ever looks at them after they get their first driver's license. Hand signal are in the 2014 Nebraska Driver's Manual - section 4D-1.

I see more bicyclists and snowmobilers use hand signals more than any one else on the roads. I rarely see tractor drivers use the turn signal lights on cab tractors and I can't remember ever seeing a farmer use hand turn signals on an open station tractor. How many of use do?
