Earlier tonight, I retrieved a Sharp copier/fax machine from a closet where it's been since 2006 and plugged it in. The last fax it received was still in place, not torn off, giving the date it was last used

It booted up with today's date correct on it's display and I figured the thermal fax paper would be useless after aging that long, but it made a decent copy.

The "proof of the pudding" will be tomorrow morning when I fax copies of some transmission parts breakdowns to a supplier.

For all the stuff that breaks and we grumble about it, some stuff just WORKS!

hat is because it is "old stuff". New stuff/$h3t" won't be capable of the same!

Sure does! I asked the local excellent mechanics about my old '77 Chebby 4x4, if I should go ahead and replace the steering pump, alternator, oil pump, etc. etc., now before they fail, and they said "NO!" They said many old items were built of such quality they are much better than new ones, just keep running them as long as you can.

Yep.

When we were racing stock cars, the only timing chain we ever had fail was a fancy double roller racing chain. We went back to a plain old $12 Chevy chain and no more timing chain problems.

You didn't go back to the aluminum/nylon tipped cam gear also did you? I lost 2 engines because of that and after the second, any time I bought a V8 of the era, especially GM, I changed it before I did anything.

Nope.

No way would I put an aluminum/nylon cam gear in a racing engine. I wouldn't even replace one in a street engine with anything but steel.
