Looking for advice

Hello all.

I have a 1940s Ford tractor. I am overwhelmed trying to keep 10-ish acres weed free with a dual gang six foot wide disc. I have a three point/PTO but no other hydraulics.

I had a farmer local to me use his big Case with a weed rodder earlier in the year and he sorted the field out in nearly no time.
I don't think I can achieve a neat clear field using my Ford in any practical amount of time.

I'm looking for advice on a purchase next year on a used tractor and equipment that will allow me to clear the field in a reasonable amount of time.

Thanks in advance

M

The biggest thing we would need to know is what kind of budget you are wanting to stay under. Then if You want some thing that would maybe need a little work or do you want newer???

The Ford you have is in the 20-30 HP class. You could easily buy double the HP for not that much money.

Budget, and brand preference would be my questions as a farmall M will pull a 10' disc with ease and be cheap , a new 50-60 horse power John Deere with cab and air conditioning will do the same but cost 50 times what a farmall from the 1940's will.

Why are you discing it at all? You need to spray it with Roundup. Kill everything. Then drill in the grass/hay/ alfalfa of your chice. Then a mower is all you need.

Hello all-thank you for the words.

Upon re-reading my post I apologise as I didn't ask the question properly...

What are my options on used tractors (Ideally under $6K) that can use a weed rodder? Any info on a specific type of implement is most appreciated.

For the time being, I just want to keep the field clear.

If it helps, I live in eastern Washington State

(quoted from post at 21:13:19 09/13/16) Budget, and brand preference would be my questions as a farmall M will pull a 10' disc with ease and be cheap , a new 50-60 horse power John Deere with cab and air conditioning will do the same but cost 50 times what a farmall from the 1940's will.

And just where is he supposed to find a usable 10' disk? Around here most of those have already gone to scrap! 2 reason the M is cheap. It's too big for most guys who can only have one old tractor to store and too small for many farmers today. I know, I know, some people still use them. But here the small guys are running 700 or so acres. Their grain augers require tractors in the 70 or bigger HP range. So implements for a 40-50 HP tractor that are not 3 point went to scrap years ago. Heck last couple of mechanical ground lift plows I've seen at auction here, 3-14's were in really poor condition sold in the 650 price range. Plus a guy would have to buy 2 or 3 to come up with one field ready plow for a show queen!

For the OP: Research a rod weeder, smallest one you can find in your local area. See what the HP requirements are for your soil conditions. I don't know but I suspect that you will have trouble finding one small enough for an M in the 40-50 HP range. I would almost bet that you are going to be into a 60-70 HP tractor for what you are going to find. And there are tractors out there in that size range that should come in under your budget. I would look at find the weeder first then match it too a tractor.

Buy a rotary mower and mow it several times a year. Run the disc over it when the ground is soft and scatter some grass seed. Eventually the grass will overtake most of the weeds.
