Advice needed for possible trade

Trading - 1971 model DB Selectematic 1200 with new rear tires. Only thing wrong is bent steering cylinder rod but still works. 72hp Diesel

Trading for - Mid 70s model Simplicity 4040 with 5' disk harrow. 20hp Onan 2 cylinder gas burner

David Brown is solid good running tractor that I just don't need.
4040 runs as well but I'm not sure how the female PTO works.

I'm going to look at 404 this weekend. What say y'all??

According to tractordata it's supposed to be a 16.5 HP engine. Rear PTO 2000 RPM, Front 3600.

Almost all of the older GT's with a PTO did not run 540 or 1000. Some turned backwards compared to a standard farm tractor PTO.

While the Onan engine is a tuff durable engine they can be very expensive to rebuild. It's got a Sundstrand hydro in it. They are pretty good.

Will definitely check the rotation on the PTO. I will also see if I can determine if indeed it's the original engine. According to the owner the PTO is female so my question is what holds the drive shaft on the implement in place?
Thanks far y'alls replies by the way.

We have a 4040, neat little tractor, 3 pt with oem top link, remotes if I recall, front or back one or the other. It had 425 hours on it and ran good, I have not run it in years as I have not worked at our other place in years.

The repower for one of these is expensive, maybe there are more options now, do check that engine over. Not sure about the hydrostatic drive train, but I have seen lots of attachments for these.

The Simplicity 4040 Rear PTO is 2000 RPM. They where a sub compact tractor before compacts became common. IF you have the implements/attachments that where designed for it they would be handy on an acreage. IF you do not have the attachments than the use is limited.

That's kinda what I was afraid of. In the meantime I have rebuilt the steering cylinder on the DB so it's value has gone up for as I'm concerned. The DB is solid as a rock with no leaks and burns no oil with new rubber on the back. I know it has basically no value in todays market but it's worth keeping even if I don't get to use it very often. I just don't have enough truck to pull it. Thanks folks for all the help with this

I'm confused... you want to trade a real farm tractor w/ 72 hp. and new rear tires for a garden tractor with 16 -20 hp and weird PTO and they both are about the same age? Am I missing something?

Your are not confused. The #s don't look good I agree but all I have is a F-150 and 3 different places I hunt where I use a tractor. So it makes since (I thought) to go with something smaller. However since doing some homework and learning more about the Simplicity I am going to keep what I got and hope I can find something one day that I can move the DB from place to place with. I wish I could find someone who would be willing to trade a smaller tractor for this one though. Nothing fancy somewhere between 30-40 HP but I don't think that's gone happen.
