No till drill question.

I'm going to seed down some crop land to pasture. I use a JD 750 no till drill that I am sure will do a fine job. I need the seeder attachment, though. I just checked eBay and didn't see any. How rare are those attachments? I can see me using it once every five years, but the ones from extension are a nightmare. No one seems to know how to set them and they are half busted. I have an old McCormick horse drawn one but the ground has to be worked to death to make to do a good job.

I have a small grain seeder attachment on one of our 750 drills. They work good for timothy seed I know. For grasses I just put them in the seed box. Orchard grass seed will no feed out of the small seeder very well.If you have any questions I will try to help you.

Weigh out the grass seed and put it into a cement mixer along with a bushel of oats per acre, then use the seed box you have.

If you do not want the cover crop then run the grain through a mill and crack it first or mix the seed with some granular fertilizer.
Just make sure the blend is not going to burn your seed.

the grass seed attachment is no longer available from Deere, unless you buy all the individual parts. I upgraded drills a few years ago (to a bigger 750) and the new one did not have grass seed. So I bought the half speed gear kit from Deere, and installed that for seeding alfalfa etc with the big hopper. It works great- accurate, and no filling the little hopper every 3 acres or so. A setting of 7 is about 15 lb per acre for alfafla with the slow speed gears.

I just went to the half speed sprockets and put it in the box when I had a 750. You can really dial it in if you work at it a little. Just hang on to your hat when you buy the sprockets. Good luck - Bob
