JD 2010 water pump

So, I need to replace the bearing & seal in the water pump. I've bought the new parts. The seal is a newer type, spring loaded. When I put the impeller in and seated it deep enough, the ceramic disc for the new seal shattered. Is it possible the impeller is too long for these new type seals. Also, what is best sealer to use on the housing gasket. I have RTV red. That ok?

It's possible, but it never went in to far to hit the housing. In fact, as far as I could tell it did not get to the 1/32" clearance depth either. I assume the impeller
should have only compressed the seal spring about 1/2 way, even if bottomed out 100%. Make sense? It never bottomed out. When I pulled it all apart, the seal side is
damaged from crushing the ceramic disk too. So, something is drastically wrong with the space in there. All I can think is the impeller may be wrong. Someone had altered
the water pump mounting so I know it has been messed with. Could it have the wrong impeller in it?

I would check the impeller thickness. Did you make sure and remove the old wear ring out of the back of the impeller??? If you left it in the stack height would be too tall.

Also have you pressed the bearing into the correct depth?? On the new seal did the brass outer piece go in fully? This sets the depth.

Doesn't appear there is a wear ring. If there had been, it may be some of the parts that came out with the shaft / bearing. They all came out in pieces. And the new seal is flush, yes. Looks like I will just buy a second new kit, try again and just get the impeller to go below the back plate by a few thousands. Thanks for help.
