removing plumb thickets

have a new to us 20 acre patch we want to row crop next year. has a couple fences in it that have overgrown plumb thickets. grass at this time but want to remove plumb thickets. don't have a backhoe and not worth 150.00 an hour to hire someone to come in. has anyone removed these and what did you use? was thinking of just plowing but not sure how strong the roots are. then thought about finding a one or two shank ripper.

How bad are the thorns? There is on the market a thing that is basically two pieces of iron connected at the top with a piece of chain the idea is as you pull over the bush the two pieces of iron closes and pulling the shrubs out. I'm thinking that there is one that operates off the hydraulic that goes on a skid loader. It might not be a bad idea to rent a skid loader that way if there's thorns in the tires in won't be your problem. One guy I knew bought a steel wheeled tractor just for pushing out thorn bushes.

I took out some plum bushes with a loader tractor once--and spent the next six months fixing flat front tires. Those thorns kept on working through forever.

Hire or rent a tracked machine.

Or spray the crud out of them with Tordon and non-ionic surfactant now, and again next summer to kill the roots, then hire or rent a tracked machine.

thanks for the thoughts. had not thought about the thorn issue. might be best to talk to the excavator fella and get an idea of how long it would take. probably not long and would be worth not having to fix tires.
