generator charging question

Finally got the 6 volt generating system to charge on my A. Only thing I see now is it has to have more than half throttle to get enough rpms to charge. Is there any way to get it to charge at least a little
at lower RPMS? The 12 volt system on my 300U doesn't need as many rpms to at least charge a bit.

Pulleys of course make a difference. There are many different spec'd. generators too. I tried a gen. off a two cyl. JD on an AC tractor once, and it would only charge at near wide open. We found that the correct gen. for the AC charged at a much lower speed.

A what brand makes a difference some gens had three brushes and the position of the third brush determined charge rate. I it IH or JD

that is all in the regulator adjustment.
most times people just replace the regulator, as once they play around with it they get it all screwed up. it takes a bit of a procedure to adjust them. even need to make sure the contacts are clean also. im sure john t will give the know how.

Charlie, good question "Is there any way to get it to charge at least a little at lower RPMS"

YES

Things like a smaller generator pulley...
Make sure belt is good n tight...
Insure both the genny and VR have good clean shiny frame grounds...
In the event it were an adjustable 3 brush genny, move the adjustable third brush closer to the fixed brush beside it
A good clean bright shiny generator commutator helps with good brushes and tight hold down springys

Finally, VR's can be adjusted by bending tabs or adjusting spring tension etc BUT I DONT GET INTO ADVISING ON SUCH OVER THE NET as it takes a good meter and know how and its easy to screw things up when you start bending tabs and changing spring tension, I advise let a genny shop do that. I think Jim janicholson offers VR adjusting advice, sorry I don't.

John, just had a thought, never tried this, but in theory...

Couldn't a diode be wired across the GEN or ARM terminal of the regulator to the BAT terminal? Wouldn't that over ride a sleepy cut out relay? Wouldn't need much, just enough to carry through until the cut out closed.

I worked for the local Deere dealership when the A was still being made and there was an optional small pulley and belt for cold weather and other times when the lights were used and tractor started frequently. This spun the generator faster for more output.
